vaporATX
I'm building a hackie for a good friend. He wanted to pick the cosmetic stuff and he left the nitty gritty to me. Big mistake. Well... on to my question: He loves the case he bought, but it's a mid tower where the damn PS mounts on its side right over the damn CPU socket. This is a Q6600 build and I want to juice it up a bit, but the stock cooler barely fits... we're talking like 3-4 mm to spare between the top of the cooler and the PS. Can anybody recommend a decent low profile cooler stock size or smaller that'd be good for a mild overclock (probably only push it 3 GHz). The stock cooler will probably be fine, but I just don't trust that garbage. I found this one, but it is way too expensive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...mp;Tpk=cnps8000 Any ideas? knewsom
I dunno, dude... I don't mess around when it comes to cooling. I'd say pay the $45 bux for a good one like that, or go liquid if you plan to OC. ESPECIALLY if the proc is right next to the damned PSU, sheesh, that's about the dumbest place for a power supply I've ever heard. What genius thought of that? "Gee, I know how to make the case smaller, let's put a huge, very warm device CENTIMETERS above the CPU!" vaporATX
Yeah, the case is a real pos. Still trying to talk him out of using it. It looks really nice, but the layout and construction is hideous. lordmozilla
that sucks man, I always make them choose the case with me when building a pc for someone else... That cooler seems ok, I mean the stock Q6600 one isn't really that bad, I use the artic freezer 7 pro which is cheap and good but it's big. have a look at this : (might be a bit cheaper, it's the cheapest thermalright cooler) http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/pro...W50aHVzaWFzdA== http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...mp;Tpk=MST-9775 Not sure how low profile it is though. Thermalright site has specs Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/101200-help-with-a-low-profile-cooler-for-a-q6000/#findComment-722376 Share on other sites
vaporATX
Naaa, I'm looking at about 60 mm max height. That's 77 mm. I wouldn't be so worried about the stock cooler if it wasn't jammed up so close to the PS. The case does have a blow hole right over the cooler location, so maybe things won't be so bad. Guess I'll just build it up and see where the temps sit. It it runs too hot it'll give me some leverage to force the issue of exchanging the {censored}.... or I could give him one of my Lian Li cases... or not.
