Although I would love to get something a bit more... AMD, I think this is the best machine I can get for the dollars. Keep in mind that this thing is going to be used for more high end stuff - audio and video production - and XP Gaming...

CPU:

Pentium D 920 - or 930 (depending on price at computer fair) Thats a Dual Processor 2.8 or 3.0 with a FSB of 800 and 2MB of L2 cache for each processor.

MOBO:

Some D945G Motherboard - Firewire isn't really needed, I'm just after the 9220 Codec and a bunch of PCI slots. Also, are all D945G motherboards EFI compatiblie (not that this really matters...)?

HD:

Perhaps 2 160-250GB SATA Drives

RAM:

At least 2GB, hopefully 4GB of 533 or 667 DDR2 SDRAM.

GPU:

X1600 Pro PCI-E - Now it seems to be that this card is fully supported under 10.4.4? Anyway I can get something better later on.

OPTICAL DRIVE:

Pioneer 110D or BenQ DL Burner.

CASE & PSU:

No idea yet. What sort of case, and power supply's do people recommend? I'm guessing I need at least 450W and a number of fans.

What do you think?

NOTE: This Machine seems to be all the rage at the moment, I've done a fair wack of research and I'm pretty keen on it - so go on... unsettle it for me.

You will get graphic glitches with anything other than onboard Intel GMA video, I've gone back to GMA from an ATIX1600XT as I couldn't stand it (you also can't run full screen games or iphoto slideshows aas the mouse pointer get spread across the whole screen and you have to reboot to fix it)

Other than that its probably a good setup to go for

Damn - Graphics glitches. Damn. Why isn't this mentioned on the HCL!!

I went to a computer fair yesterday and bought various organs for this beast that I am building. Here's what I got:

X1600 Pro PCI_E (damn graphics glitches!) __ AU$199

Western Digital 7200RPM Sata II 200GB HD __ AU$129

Pioneer 110D __ AU$65

Case (built there from scratch) 600W PSU, two intake fans on the front, one large exhaust fan at the rear and one intake fan on the side __ AU$197

19" Phillips Trinitron CRT __ AU$245

So I got about half what I need (cost wise). I'm pretty happy. The computer fair seemed to be far cheaper than anywhere on the internet. But I'll need to get the mobo and Processor (RAM too) from various - or one online shop.

I'll keep you informed.

I can tell you that you picked the perfect burner

Thanks for the confirmation.

I plan to run 10.4.4

So yesterday I ordered the last of the parts.

Intel Processor D 920 - Au$399

D945GNTLKR - Au$181

2GB 667 DDR2 - Au$264

All up Au$1700, beats the {censored} out of Au$2700 (education price at that!!!) for a 20" iMac from the Apple Store.

When they rock up, hopefully late this week, early next week. I get to begin assembly. I'm excited! Any words of warning?
