hmatos
I'd like to thank everyone that's contributed so much information to this forum, I wouldn't have been able to setup my machine without it. Here is the hardware I am using: Processor: Intel E2200 2.2GHz 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L, Network: Trendnet TEG-PCITXR Memory: 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800mhz, Video: MSI Nvidia GeForce 6600GT 128MB Drives: 3 Seagate 750GB SATA OS X RAID Striped, IDE DVD RW 2x Rosewill RC-211 Silicon Image 2 port SATA II PCI Express Host Controller Card 1x Silicon Image Sil3132 (2 e-SATA ports) This machine serves as a file server to other Macs and an Apple TV in the house. For the most part, it works pretty well, with the following exception: Wired network (AFP and SMB) file transfer speeds are extremely unpredictable -- one minute they're phenomenal, the next I'm transferring at about 1 KB p/second and finder estimates that a 2GB file will take 32 hours to copy. If I look at the Activity Monitor on the server, I can see that Network Send activity is usually a few bits higher than what the other machine is receiving and nothing is taxing the CPU (+60% Idle). The problem is made worse when I try to update an iPod, an iPhone, or transfer several movies to another Mac. If I restart the iMac or MacBook Pro which is requesting the data from the server, it helps for a while and then everything slows down again. I'm able to improve throughput, if I restart the Mac requesting the data and the file server. Again, it doesn't last very long -- I can usually get anywhere between 5GB to 30GB transferred before I start to see this issue. I installed from a retail DVD of Leopard and I'm using EFI V8. Here's my post-patch.sh script, if it would help identify the problem. #!/bin/bash # # 1. Disk, Partition Scheme 1, GUID, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) # 2. Unmount after making note of what device is used (Apple I) # 3. Terminal window & sudo su - then execute pre-patch.sh # 4. Make sure the install DVD is mounted # 5. cd /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/Packages # 6. open OSInstall.mpkg # 7. OS 10.5.2 Updater # 8. Graphics Update # # Then execute this script DESTINATION=Macintosh /usr/sbin/vsdbutil -a /Volumes/$DESTINATION # # Backup incompatible vanilla kexts # sudo mkdir /Volumes/$DESTINATION/vanilla sudo cp -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/mach_kernel /Volumes/$DESTINATION/vanilla/ sudo cp -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/AppleACPIPlatform.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/vanilla/ sudo cp -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/AppleAHCIPort.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/vanilla/ sudo cp -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/AppleEFIRuntime.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/vanilla/ sudo cp -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/vanilla/ sudo cp -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/AppleSMBIOS.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/vanilla/ sudo cp -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/IOAHCIFamily.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/vanilla/ sudo cp -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/IOATAFamily.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/vanilla/ sudo cp -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/JMicronATA.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/vanilla/ # sudo cp -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/vanilla/ # # Remove incompatible vanilla kexts: It's usually recommended to remove AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement kext to reduce CPU temperature # and prevent "Package 0 didnt get an HPET" error. # sudo rm -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/AppleEFIRuntime.kext sudo rm -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/AppleSMBIOS.kext sudo rm -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext # # Page decryption EFI module - required for vanilla and binary hacked kernels, not required for kernels compiled from sources # sudo cp -r kext/dsmos.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/ # # PC EFI compatible AppleSMBIOS v.13 # sudo cp -r pc_efi_v80/AppleSMBIOS.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/ # # ICH9 & AHCI drivers - without these kexts the last 2 SATA ports are disabled and AHCI cannot be used # sudo cp -r kext/AppleAHCIPort.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/ sudo cp -r kext/IOAHCIFamily.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/ sudo cp -r kext/IOATAFamily.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/ # # AUDIO: drag the audio/alc888.txt file to the HDA patcher and then reboot # sudo cp -r kext/ALCinject.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/ sudo cp -r kext/AppleHDA.kext /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions/ # # Remove kext cache (if any) # sudo rm -r /Volumes/$DESTINATION/System/Library/Extensions.mkext # # Repair permissions - recommended but not required # sudo diskutil repairpermissions /Volumes/$DESTINATION/ Any help would be greatly appreciated! hm Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100659-network-issues-1052-retail-install/ Share on other sites
hmatos
I thought it was the motherboard, but after about 10 hours of use, the problem resurfaced. I've now replaced a network router, multiple switches, two ethernet cards, and the motherboard. It doesn't seem to be an actual issue with the network switches and/or wiring -- at one point I put the Hackintosh and one Mac on a switch by themselves and was able to reproduce the problem. The problem is always with the Hackintosh and not with other Macs on my network. I'll get great AFP and/or SMB file transfer performance (approx. 46 MB/sec as high as 60+ MB/sec) for a while and then it will inexplicably go south to the tune of 68 KB/sec. I also start to time out under the "shared" section of Finder (where you can browse other machines on your network) and get multiple "Failed" messages. The problem goes away when I reboot the machine that was trying to perform the copy. Anyone else experiencing this problem? Thanks, hm Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100659-network-issues-1052-retail-install/#findComment-732968 Share on other sites
bitrot
Howdy, I'm running a EVGA NForce 680i Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme 2.93ghz with a 8800GTX and everything is working great except the onboard LAN. I'm not loading the forcedeth kext and I purchased a trendnet card as well to get stable network connectivity when the network is at high capacity. I did use a Linksys 100TX card w/ the tulip.kext and I experienced the same issues while using this Trendnet TEG-PCITXR HW REV: 3.1 When I TX or RX data over the LAN or even using my internet (which maxes out around 1.5-2MB/s) the network dies 100%. I'm not able to ping the gateway, bringing the interface down and up does nothing. When i had the 100TX card in I would run `kextunload tulip.kext` and then `kextload tulip.kext` and I would get my network back for a short period of time until I started utilizing most of the bandwidth then it would drop again. I figured the Trendnet TEG-PCITXR card would resolve this issue, I thought It was an actual problem with the tulip driver but it seems that now that the problem is happening with the native driver for the Trendnet TEG-PCITXR card, this leads me to assume something else is causing the network to die out like that every time. Just as a note this is nothing to do with my network at all my router and switches have been working just fine and continue to work fine while i use the same card and machine in windows, also I've tried to force the network to 100Mbps as well as 1000Mbps (I have a gigE network) and the issues till happens. I'm able to download something from the net at around 1-2MB/s for quite some time before the network dies down and I do have to say that the Trendnet TEG-PCITXR card actually doesn't die out as fast as the 100TX card did while using the tulip.kext. I would appreciate any help or information someone may have to help me identify or resolve this problem, this is pretty much the only thing that my OSX86 install is lacking. Oh I also forgot to mention that I did *NOT* use a *RETAIL* install I've been using the OSX86 10.5.2 by Kalway (Which worked awesome BTW TYVM!) Thank you! elfzig
I'm experiencing exactly the same, with both onboard LAN (via ViaRhine.kext) and a 3com 905C-TX (no driver installed). The more I utilize bandwith, the sooner my network dies (which eventually does anyway). After a week, having almost getting used to it, it feels like "aggregated traffic volume kills network", but I can't prove that. Running 10.5.2 leo4all v3 (Kernel 9.2.2, the patched one, not vanilla) with no other modifications. hmatos
I also tried replacing the cards, many times -- a Netgear GA-311 is the last one I tried before I gave up trying to use the machine as a file server. I've since moved the data to a FreeNAS box -- I wish there were a solution, other than the obvious of spending $3K on a Mac Pro. Something else that's odd, I also have a ThinkPad which I turned into a Hac-Book and oddly enough, if I'm on my MacBook Pro (or any other Mac on my network) and I map a drive from the Hac-Pro using Finder, if I use finder to access the ThinkPad under the "Shared" arrow, it shows me the volumes from the Hac-Pro. I actually have to eject the Hac-Pro shares to be able to see the volumes on the ThinkPad. Example, Shared > ThinkPad HacPro Click on ThinkPad and HacPro's volumes show up, if I've already attached to a HacPro volume via Finder. Hppefully that makes sense. hm Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100659-network-issues-1052-retail-install/#findComment-788755 Share on other sites

ben10
I was having problems with a 3com which I replaced with a netgear pci card, both of them would randomly drop connection and give me a "self assigned ip" after a while..it was pretty annoying and I would have to restart. I ended up finding this thread: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...=73347&st=0 very helpful. There are more specific solutions to these types of networking issues. =) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/100659-network-issues-1052-retail-install/#findComment-993681 Share on other sites
