Ranger
http://www.businessweek.com/technology/con...0126_148049.htm "After getting trounced for four years in the digital music business by Apple Computer (AAPL ), Microsoft (MSFT ) finally seems poised to do something about it. BusinessWeek has learned that the software giant is working on plans to develop its own portable digital media device to rival the iPod, rather than just providing technology to partners. Microsoft hasn't decided if it will go ahead. But sources inside the company and at its partners say Microsoft has put together a team that's considering the business end of such an initiative." Mr. Bond
So it's definetly not set in stone...much like that Xbox handheld I hear about... It would be interesting to see if MS could trump the ease-to-use UI and sleek design that have made the iPod's such a juggernaut in the music industry. Of course, I'd expect their to be a heavy focus on DRM, particularly their protected WMA's. I wonder if they'd try to up the ante, and go for a video-playing solution as well, to try to combat Apple's iPod Video...
A Nonny Moose
A lot of people have tried to take on the iPod, but they lack the dock connector. This is the one major thing the iPod has going for it (believe it or not). That and it works with iTunes music. If Microsoft is going into the market, it needs to have a universal connector that isn't USB-based and it needs to play iTunes music. Most likely, it will do neither and will fail like all the others.
