How did you manage to separate you dock ?
I cannot add separate icon since I upgraded to Mountain LIon

terminal:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{tile-data={}; tile-type="spacer-tile";}'
killall Dock

then drag the spacer where you want it.
