Hi,

I managed to install Mountain Lion under VMware 9 using the instructions found at http://www.tonymacx8...l-based-pc.html -- Unfortunately, I'm seeing two problems:

1. Go to "Users & Groups" and attempt to change the current user's icon. When I click on the current icon a panel comes up with Defaults, Recent and Camera. Problem is, there are no icons on the right. If I click randomly in the empty panel, then click Done, the icon *does* change. This leads me to believe that the icons aren't rendering correctly for some reason (but they *are* there).

2. Once I install VMWare Tools I begin seeing a "double caret" for text-editing fields. Meaning, when I move the mouse over a text field I see two mice. One belongs to the guest and the other to the host. The mouse looks fine as a pointer, but not in text-editor mode.

Any ideas?

The user icon issue is because the VM doesn't support acceleration.

The mouse issue is probably because of the VMWare Tools.

VMWare isn't reallys supposed to run OS X, it's a "work around" to get it to work.  So it's kind of a trade off.

  I guess I could live with these two issues, but the final problem is that once I install VMWare Tools I also start seeing kernel panics every single shutdown. Here is the stack-trace:

I need VMWare Tools because clipboard sharing won't work with it (which is a major inconvenience). Any ideas on how to fix this?

How are you installing this? I don't think using the link you provided is the best way. Check out the unlocker threads here, and use a retail copy of OS X. However even running in Fusion there are issue such as no icons for login screen.

Regarding the unlocker, I am using version 1.1.0 which seems to be the newest version discussed on this forum. What do you recommend on this front?

You don't need ###### you should be able to create an ISO file from ML installer app and just boot it (there ar eposts on this forum about doing this). That was the point of the unlocker, and it should work just fine on Workstation 9 as I use it myself. The problem with these other solutions is that they usually put a bunch   of stuff that isn't needed on the guest and then we end up with ll sorts of different issues.

Fair enough. Just to make sure I understand correctly, you're saying you did the following?

1. Convert ML installer app to ISO
2. Create new machine in Workstation 9
3. Install ML from the ISO
4. When installation completes, install VMWare Tools using darwin.iso that shiped with Unlocker 1.1.0

and you did not end up with the Kernel Panic I posted above?

and the Kernel Panics are finally gone! I haven't tried updating to 10.8.2 or enabling audio yet. I'll post follow-up questions to that thread.

Here is a summary of what I did to get OSX 10.8 installed on a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3Rv2 motherboard. Hopefully this will help others.

• Install VMWare Workstation 9
  
• Install VMWare Unlocker 1.1.0 from http://www.insanelym...-os-x-unlocker/
  
• Downloaded install.zip from http://www.insanelym...-mountain-lion/
  
• Downloaded DSDT file for the motherboard from http://www.tonymacx8...t-database.html
  
• Download a DSDT editor from http://www.insanelym...or-and-patcher/
  
• Edit the motherboard DSDT file, changing the layout-id to 12 as instructed by install/ALC885HDA_Lion_MLion_V1.00/Readme First.txt
  
• Compile the DSDT file and copy it into install/extra/DSDT.aml
  
• Edited install/finalize and removed the lines that copy the audio driver into place (the OS detects the audio driver fine by itself, running these lines actually causes audio to *not* work)
  
• Install Mountain Lion from USB
  
• Reboot into USB
  
• Run "finalize"
  
• Reboot back into Mountain Lion.
  
• Install VMWare Tools using darwin.iso that came with unlocker 1.1.0
  
• Reboot.

I suspect that I might Donk might be right and I should be able to install MountainLion without replacing any drivers. I'm going to try this next.

I'm happy to report that Donk was right. Here are the shortened install steps:

1. Buy Mountain Lion (don't run the installer otherwise it'll delete itself)
2. Convert the installer into an ISO: hdiutil convert "Install Mac OS X Lion.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg" -format UDTO -o "Install Mac OS X Lion.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.iso" as mentioned at http://partnerweb.vm...acOSX_10_7.html
3. Copy the ISO (you'll have to rename it from .iso.cdr to .iso) to the host
4. Install Workstation 9
5. Run VMWare unlocker 1.1.0 found here: http://www.insanelym...-os-x-unlocker/
6. Mount the ISO in the machine's CDROM settings
7. Create a new Virtual Machine for Mountain Lion
8. Install Mountain Lion inside the VM
9. Install VMWare tools using darwin.iso that came with the unlocker
10. You're done.

There is no need for any special patches, at least not for 10.8 (10.8.2 might be a different story).

Doing well and yourself? I hadn't realised that ESXi 5.1 had the DMG code in it, but makes sense as Apple Mac Pros are formally supported by VMware. Maybe with cowwoc's help we should use this as a new thread for Workstation 9, Fusion 5 and ESXi 5.1?

As for tools go get them from Fusion 5 for now. They will be the ones I add to the unlocker.

All fine at this end, maybe better if you start a new thread, most people associate your name as the reference point for all things VMware and OS X. If you let me know we will follow the convention of our previous threads. Then your first post can be updated with the new v9 "Unlocker" when ready. I use the v9 based on the compatibility level of W9, F5 and ESXi 5.1, just a thought.

Since I am busy doing clean installs of ML on W9/P5 and ESXi 5.1 I will do some updated install guides while I am at it, probably time for a set based on the latest universal "Unlocker" from you and Zenith.

From my point of view, the biggest thing you're missing is a link off the home page to the build instructions. Finding build instructions buried inside a forum post is hard. It didn't even show up in various Google searches I've made for over a week now.

For starters, you could go to http://wiki.osx86pro...x.php/Main_Page and add a link to the build instructions beside the Hardware Compatibility section. When you go to http://tonymacx86.blogspot.ca/ they dedicate an entire section to "guides" and feature build instructions for Mountain Lion right there at the top right corner of the main page. Just a thought...

We wanted get some things stickied but never got a response from a moderator. I am thinking it may be simpler to put guides on my web site but that is about to move hosters and so would be awhile.

BTW be aware that the tonymac stuff is banned here by the fourm mods.

There is no quartz extreme support under vmware or virtualbox. Try moving a piece on Chess game and you will see you can't because of that.

I've just managed to get ML 10.8.2 installed under VMWare Player 5 with no issues. I just converted the DMG into an ISO (using dmg2img in Windows) then plugged it into a unlocked VMWare Player. Performance is good enough to do basic iOS development on too.. Here is my Geekbench score:
