Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H - USB Problems + Time Machine

Hello, again.

I just wanted to run a couple of things by UD5H owners - with regards to USB.

As I have spent the last couple of days messing with the system, I have been changing things around, overclocking, trying to understand how the USB3 to 2 switching works etc etc. Anyway I got myself in a right load of trouble - USB was failing all over the place, Bluetooth dongle would continually disconnect, USB hard drives would disconnect - the only thing that did seem to stay connected was the USB receiver for my Logitech mouse.

Anyway after some searching I found a post on tonymacx86 about what settings the XHCI and EHCI should be set to, including the hand offs. The settings suggested were:

XHCI Mode: Auto

XHCI Handoff: Enabled

EHCI Handoff: Enabled

Does this sound right to you guys? I am testing now and so far so good, however I do anticpate it not being resolved.

I have been having Time Machine issues since moving to ML. When I upgraded to ML i also swaped my Time Machine disk for another empty hard drive that had been in a USB enclosure and attached to the computer, but not really used much. Time Machine would back up fine for a couple of times, then it would go on about not being able to create folders on the TM drive. Only way to resolve it would be force eject the hard drive and remount, but after a couple of backups it does the same thing again.

Any advice welcome. Thanks

For anyone who is interested in helping :-

After testing It looks like as long as I plug the bluetooth dongle into the USB ports on the motherboard, it seems to be ok. If I plug it in the front panel of the case, or even plug a powered usb hub into the port on the motherboard, and then the dongle into the hub, I still get errors.

The errors look like this :-

30/07/2012 00:41:20.511 blued[86]: kBTXPCUpdateUserPreferences gConsoleUserUID = 501
30/07/2012 00:41:20.000 kernel[0]: [iOBluetoothHCIController][ProcessEventDataWL] -- kBluetoothHCIEventHardwareError occurred -- status = 0x0003 (kBluetoothHCIErrorHardwareFailure) -- mNumberOfCommandsAllowedByHardware is 1,  processing -- opCode = 0x0000 (UNKNOWN),  requestPtr = 0
30/07/2012 00:41:20.000 kernel[0]: [iOBluetoothHCIController][ProcessEventDataWL] -- eventStatus = kBluetoothHCIErrorHardwareFailure -- we are attempting a device reset! -- mNumberOfCommandsAllowedByHardware is 1,  processing -- opCode = 0x0000 (UNKNOWN),  requestPtr = 0
30/07/2012 00:41:20.000 kernel[0]: [iOBluetoothHCIController][ProcessEventDataWL] -- eventStatus = kBluetoothHCIErrorHardwareFailure -- calling KillAllPendingRequests() -- mNumberOfCommandsAllowedByHardware is 1,  processing -- opCode = 0x0000 (UNKNOWN),  requestPtr = 0
30/07/2012 00:41:20.000 kernel[0]: [iOBluetoothHCIController][ProcessEventDataWL] -- eventStatus = kBluetoothHCIErrorHardwareFailure -- calling BluetoothHCIReset() -- mNumberOfCommandsAllowedByHardware is 1,  processing -- opCode = 0x0000 (UNKNOWN),  requestPtr = 0

It will repeat that several times in a row, usually with the keyboard reconnecting straight away - though somtimes it has failed to reconnect.

Its not that much of a problem placing the dongle in the back of the computer, just that its on the outer limits of the range of the dongle.

I could try another dongle, or another USB hub (currently using a D-Link hub - Belkin Bluetooth Dongle ).

Again, any advice apprecaited,

Thanks.

You probably have a USB2/3 problem. Only 2 USB ports on that board are USB2 (the red/orange ones), the others are USB3. I suspect your hub is usb2/1, the ports on the front of the case will likely be USB 2. Take that into consideration when doing your tests.

Thanks for your reply.

So are you saying that plugging a USB2 hub into a USB3 port could be the problem? I am almost certain that I have tried with the hub plugged into the USB2 port, but I will try again. I am sure I have also tried running a USB cable from my Dell monitor to the USB2 port and using the monitor USB hub for the dongle.

I will try a few more things tomorrow. I think its just a strange case of that particular dongle only wanting to work on the back ports of this motherboard. I hope anyway :)

The keyboard isn't dropping connection any more with the dongle plugged in the back so I guess I can live with it.

Which header are you using on the board, If using the USB3 header near the ram, this seems to be USB3 only, where as the two headers at the bottom work as USB2 & USB3.
