[syntax21]

It seems that when I upgrade to 10.6.8 I can no longer run things like itunes and iCal ect.
Says cannot be opeded becasue of a problem, and the report says the files are missing pretty much. I have been upraging using the software update, am I doing something wrong?

You didn't specify specs of your computer. nevertheless use combo update.

I did do the combo update, as this is a software problem, I didn't supply PC specs.
Pentium dual core, 4gb ddr2, Radeon 6870....well basically a dell i530 with a new PSU and the 6870.
I did the combo update from 10.6.3 via the updater in the settings.
Im finding a lot of files dissapear when I update, I cant run iTunes, for example. Ill try to post the exact error code soon.

Damn I dont know mac.
Meant System preferences> Software update>(hit "check") and combo update shows up. Same size as the one from apple.com, though I'll try that one too.

Download the COMBO UPDATE from Apple. Here is the link to make life easy Download . Then when you have the updated there on your system, if you need to play around with it you can. Download Pacifist and you can use it to extract and install individual components if needed. Be careful tho, as with great power, comes great responsibility

If still a problem can you post 2 of the error messages your getting, each from launching a different app? I doubt it says pretty much the files are missing, but maybe a problem with missing one of the frameworks or other shared libraries that all those apps use.

Yah same thing, I don’t really know how exactly to interpret this other than files just missing, as I'm very new to mac XD

have you repaired permissions already?

Just incase u need to know: to repair file permissions open disk utility and repair from there or it can be done from terminal by typing:
diskutil repairPermissions /

if that doesn't fix it, after having done the repair, run combo update again and repair again

Or the more thorough version, boot from your install media and do a permissions as well as a disk repair with Disk Utility. You cannot run the disk repair otherwise, if you run Disk Utility from within your OS X installation, the disk repair button is greyed out.

There is another, relatively recent thread here somewhere about the exact same issue that you're having, try to find it. I don't remember what the OP did to fix it though.

Just to clarify, when you use software update to download a system update (like 10.6.2 to 10.6.8) you only get the files that needs to be updated as determined by Software Update. This is not the same as the "combo update", and it does not say "combo update" anywhere when using Software Update.

Apple provides two types of downloadable, stand-alone system updates:

A combo update is a (by now) gigantic .dmg that will let you update from 10.6.0 (or any version) to the latest version of Snow Leopard
Whereas a Delta update only contains the files that let you update from one version to the next, ie 10.6.3 to 10.6.4.

For the nth time: download the full Snow Leopard 10.6.8 combo update dmg from Apple and run it. Don't use Software Update.

I did. And I also found out its the same file. Not the problem, but I tried it anyway. I may not know much about macs, but Im not stupid.

Might I add, that since 10.6.8 is so much closer in system behavior to Mountain Lion than it is to even 10.6.7, doing a combo update to 10.6.7 first then once successful combo update to 10.6.8 wouldn't be a bad idea. If you plan on using snow leopard, there is no benefit to running 10.6.8 vs 10.6.7 and app store and Lion can be installed from either version, don't know of a single app that requires 10.6.8 over 10.6.7 which was probably one of the most perfect OS release versions ever regardless of platform(it just worked!). Once going to 10.6.8 you might as well just upgrade to Lion instead anyway.

thanks, thatll be alot easier than trying to do a do over. I'll do terminal, its pretty simple looking. Pacifist seems pretty useful though, I'll still end using it. I'll start this later tonight.
