Inspiron 1525 Upgrade issues

OK, so I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with a Pentium Dual Core T2390 @ 1.86 Ghz and 2Gb RAM. I had OS 10.6.5 installed with no problems and ran it for a year or so.

Then my daughter saw that an apple software update was available and tried to install it. Needless to say, it then went straight to Kernel Panic land.

So I got out my old 10.6.3 Retail disk and reinstalled it using the Mod CD. After searching the forums, it seemed like OS 10.6.8 and 10.7 were usable on a 1525 so I decided to upgrade. I downloaded the 10.6.8 update and installed it according to this guide http://www.scribd.com/doc/71320918/DellInspiron1525OSXLionInstallGuide .

Then I used the 10.6.8 update tool by nozyczek to update the installation. When I try to boot from the Macintosh HD, I get the hard crash and the message in several languages that says to push the power button.

I have followed several other dell 1525- specific guides with litle success. It seems to me like it might be a bootloader issue? I don't have the experience to know.

I have the same installation on an external drive that boots fine but I have to use the Mod CD to select the external drive to boot from.

I used the guide above to make a 10.7 USB installer but when I try to boot from that, it starts and shows the apple but then gives a small circle with a slash through it above the apple and the spinning progress icon keeps spinning below the apple but it never gets any further in the boot process.

So, Basically, I can boot only with the aid of the Mod cd.

I would greatly appreciate any troubleshooting help. If you need any addition information, just ask, I will be happy to provide it.

Boot using -v for verbose booting so we could at least have a clue where to start, "stuck apple logo", or "multi-language reboot screen" are absolutely useless to help troubleshoot. I hate Dell.... If you just want your backup to work and use it instead, to make your external drive bootable, just run chameleon installer on it and select it as first boot device in bios. If it has all your extensions from the working install you had on it, it will boot fine. You can then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone it back onto the internal drive, replacing your broken installation. Once you boot into that, run chameleon installer again(this is just to set the correct partition as active)

OK,

Thanks a lot guys!

I opted for the "just make it work" plan and copied the image from my external drive.

I do not understand why that image boots because I installed the software on it using the same guide and did everything the same as the main HD.

Anyway, it works as far as I can tell.

Thanks for helping me see the easiest solution rather than getting boged down in troubleshooting.

Cheers

Hi Rastus302,

Check this link http://www.insanelym...howtopic=273511

By the way i would recommend to stick with 10.6.7 as 10.6.8 often lead to kernel panics on dell inspiron 1525. From 10.6.8 u need PCI section patched DSDT otherwise system will freeze without any response ( My DSDT has been patched so u can use it 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 or lion 10.7.0). Even i used to have an intel pentium dual core processor i think it was T2370 it was 1.8Ghz, so i would recommend u to use my DSDT if u dont have ur own patched DSDT.

Mac os x lion graphics drivers or kexts for X3100 are slower & laggy in performance when compared with snow leopard. But still if u want u can install it easily just follow my guide.

Update:

Yup it was T2370 processor check my geekbench score 10.6.3 http://browser.prima...ekbench2/491574 , 10.6.7 geekbench score http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/487654 , 10.7.1 geekbench score http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/487500

10.6.7 graphics is way more smoother than 10.6.3, so go for 10.6.7.

cheers
