NTFS in Snow Leopard?

Hey. Did anyone got NTFS working in SL? I've tried NTFS-3G or what it's called. It didn't work at all. In fact, my NTFS drives wouldn't mount at all so I had to remove it. Removing wasn't simple either because I couldn't access the Preference Pane of MacFUSE because since I have SL, I can't access any 3rd party Preference Panes....

So did anyone find another solution? Yeah I know..why do I have to use Windows...?!

weird..I'll try it again...now.

EDIT: again, not working. When I am trying to erase a a drive in Disk Utility I cannot chose to format it as an NTFS drive.

Can you open your MacFUSE and NTFS-3G preference panes?

Edit 2: Definitely not working here. I tried Paragon and NTFS-3G. I wasn't even really able to uninstall any of those two. I don't know why it is not working for me...

that is so weird. I can't open ANY Preference Panes at all. System Preferences says that's it's gonna switch to 32-bit mode when I want to open a Preference Pane, and that it just quits. Only Preference Panes that are made 10.6-compatible, like the recently for SL updated Perian 1.1.4, work.

And I'm not the only one having problems with Preference Panes...

btw, I also tried Paragon NTFS for Mac..no working either

Are you using a real mac? If not, this may be the problem?

I know that a known problem is the failure of NTFS drives to show up in STARTUP DISK control panel, however will mount on the desktop and can be started up from by holding OPTION during startup.

Yes I use a real Mac. After trying NTFS-3G and Paragon, NTFS-drives won't even mount on my desktop. I guess I I have to wait until they are SL-compatible..

Have you used any hacks/tweaks to remove the 32 bit binaries from the mach kernel, etc...? or have you tried to do anything to "force" the 64 bit kernel?

Normally when you open System Preferences and touch a 32 pane, it will close and re-open. I am thinking that you may have lost your 32bit system preferences binaries.

Have you tried to re-install snow leopard over your current installation, then run the 10a394,10a402,10a411 an 10a421a updates?

NTFS works when I DON't force the 64bit kernel. And yes, I ruined my 32bit system preferences binaries. I ruined it with Xslimmer btw. So what I need is someone to send me their System Preferences.app from the latest build....can you do me a favour ^^? I don't have a backup of that file, and reinstalling would take too much time which I don't have.

If you are bored, you could drop me a pm with a link to a System Preferences.app file (:

OK, lets fix pacifist....

1. Install Pacifist.

2. use a utility to show hidden files. (I use HIDDEN WAY)

3. Navigate to /usr/bin/update_dyld_shared_cache

4. RIGHT CLICK on update_dyld_shared_cache, select MAKE ALIAS

5. now you should have an item named "update_dyld_shared_cache alias"

6. RIGHT CLICK "update_dyld_shared_cache alias" and select GET INFO

7. in the NAME box type update_prebinding

8. open pacifist.....

Hey man, thanks for you help & effort! I will try if the Golden Master appears in Software Update, which it probably won't. So if it doesn't, I have to reinstall everything anyways. But thanks! Really, I appreciate it ;)

EDIT: I said I'm gonna wait but I had nothing to do and tried your steps above. Pacifist works now :D! Man, your are awesome! Let's see if I can fix my System Preferences.app ;)

EDIT2: Man you are awesome! I works! 32-bit Preference Panes work!! Thanks a lot! After all, I might not have to install everything again thanks to you :D Thanks again! I could thank you 100x :D!

no PROBLEM..... I actually found part of the information here, but not complete.....I did a yahoo search on update_prebindings and found the actually solution. I even installed pacifist to test it out. I did type out the instuctions in easy to follow directions...:D

My snow leopard is working great, except for Kodak AIO printer drivers

My really OLD version of SL has read / write NTFS out of the box... not sure why you don't.

My SL version is 10a190

I think that it was taken out somewhere along the way...my 10a411 did not have it, but I remeber more than 1 year ago, 10a190 did.

Check MacUpdate....

Pacifist 2.6 has been released!

hopefully I won't need it ;D

I wonder if it could be taken from the old versions of SL and used in the release SL if it doesn't have it back in by then?

Maybe but Apple must have taken it out for a reason. Anyways, there are always 3rd party solutions which will be ready when SL is released. I'd like to know why Apple doesn't like NTFS. Neither do I but I have to use it cause FAT has a filesize limit...

Well I tried to load the ntfs.kext from 10a190 on 10a432 system and I just couldn't figure out how to satisfy the dependancies.

Yes there are 3rd party apps / tools that allow read / write on ntfs partitions but I would rather use what was written by Apple for their own system.

The file sizes are quite different between the two of them.

Here are both of them, if anyone can figure out how to load the one labeled ntfs-rw.kext on the latest build it would be great to let us all know.

ntfs_rw.kext.zip 10a190

ntfs.kext.zip 10a432
