Anyone know if this would be a solid processor to build with? I can get my hands on a pretty cheap one, so was just curious. Would this be better than a Core Duo process? Surely think so since it's a Quad processor. Also what kind of motherboard would be a good fit for this process? ASUS, EVGA, Gigabyte? Thanks to anyone..... Master Chief Posted September 9, 2009 Share Posted September 9, 2009 I personally have a slower Q9300 (OC'ed to 3GHz) on a Asus P5K PRO, which works very well with (Snow) Leopard. And concerning that motherboard, just pick one and do a search here, or on the Internet, as that will tell you if it can be used, and what KEXT's you'll need. TomCom Posted September 10, 2009 Share Posted September 10, 2009 It's a solid CPU, much better than a Core 2 Duo, but I would recommand buying a DDR3 compliant motherboard, or at least high frequency DDR2, like 1200MHz. 800MHz DDR2 tends to become a bottleneck, like cheap HDDs. The best choice for a motherboard is Gigabyte's EP45-UD3R. Highly compatible and overclocking's great. After reading your post, I may change out the memory since it's only 1066. Looks like I hit the nail on the head with the motherboard you liked as well. But you chose the UD3R over the the UD3P. I'm assuming the board you chose is DDR3, when the one I chose is only DDR2. I will check it out. Thank you! Ok guys, I spent most of the evening putting together a system I thought was fairly worthy. I plan on doing some gaming here and there, some video editing, and what not stuff. I didn't need the i7 setup, so I thought I would save a few bucks with this setup. So you guys tell me what you think, is this a descent setup? Is everything on list compatible? Still looking for a case and PSU, but of course the parts below I need to make sure it will be ok to run the latest Snow Leopard on and be able to dual boot with Windows 7 as well. Will probably pop in two 500 gig drives, a DVD drive and a DVD-RW drive as well. But just wanted to make sure the list below will work, compatible, and is fairly solid build. Intel Q9650 Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0GHz 12MB L2 Cache Gigabyte Motherboard GA-EP45-UD3P EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB (Possible another one in a few months. Is it possible to run SLI?) Mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory (Going with 4 gigs at start, will probably go to a total of 8 in a few months) Ok so those were the four main parts....thoughts? Very close from a real Mac experience, but there's a bug that prevents sleep with a 400+ FSB. I didn't know that when I bought mine… The EP45T-UD3P is fine as long as you don't try to install 4x2GB of RAM. Read Neweggs customers comments and you'll know what I mean: it won't boot with that configuration. As far as I know, the UD3R mobos don't have the same issues, and their hardware are almost identical. Only 1 16x PCI-e vs. 2, but hackintoshes are not compatible with Crossfire/SLI, anyway, and nor are they with the TPM chip. There's very little feedback about DDR3 P45 motherboards, but since Gigabyte use the same chips for both, it should be fine. If you don't want to take any chance, buy an EP45 with some 1200MHz DDR2, for instance Cas 6 OCZ Reaper. The bandwidth should be very close to 1333MHz DDR3 Cas 7, and far better than low-end 800MHz one. Ok so on another note, I am not able to run dual GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB setup as SLI? I thought you could run SLI, but I could be wrong. However, I am planning to run dual boot with Windows 7, which I assume would be able to do SLI. So basically it sounds like I can do SLI in Windows 7 with the two cards, and Snow would just see one card? Am I thinking right? I thank you so much for your help! It's sad if you already have these 2 9800GTX, but who cares if you don't? Just buy one GTX200. Please note that some dual GPU cards do work (they appear as a single one), for instance the 9800GX2, though it may be a little tricky to install and you should search both forum and wiki before buying any of these. In that case I will look to buy an EVGA GTX260 card to put with the system. Will see if I can find a good deal on one. Already have the CPU, ordered the EP45-UD3R board last night and getting ready to order the case this evening. I got a great deal on the board from TigerDirect, I think it was around 95 with shipping and tax. Will post final parts and prices here as I get time. Getting a great deal on a NZXT case as well. Starbuckpga Posted September 16, 2009 Author Share Posted September 16, 2009 TomCom - Here is the video card I decided to go with for the build: EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 Superclocked Video Card - 896MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0 x16, SLI Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV I was able to get a killer deal on it from TigerDirect, $112 after shipping and rebate. I've also received the board, which is the Gigabyte Gigabyte EP45-UD3R Intel P45 Socket 775. I also bought a Cooler Master V8 CPU Cooler that will be used to cool the Q9650. I picked up an Antec 900 case, which looks like will hold everything and keep it cool as well. Still looking over the memory, which is the only thing I need before I can put it all together.... You'll only be able to install Snow Leopard, unless you already got another VGA card, even an old {censored} like a 7300GT. Mac OS X 10.5 does not support natively GTX 200. You have to install the software first, otherwise it kernel panics. About the memory, get at least 1066MHz DDR2 Cas 5. I've got an old VGA card that is used in an AMD system, which has a VGA and DVI out on it. I think I have another one laying around that is pretty old too, pretty sure it's just VGA. Christ I was just hoping to put this all together and pop my Snow Leopard disc in and install. I have my disc from my Macbook Pro 13" that came with my laptop. So I guess I will need to pop the old VGA card in, install Mac OS X, and then upgrade to Snow Leopard. Oh yeah this should be fun.
