dremel it in half then use a hdd ide cable to connect both halves.

 

yes, its quick and dirty but way better than paying $30+ for one

with this mod does it mean i can directly connect an ide cable to the set of "front panel" pins on my motherboard and it will work?

I thought the pin configuration would be different, no?

Do you need a dremel? - I was planning to just saw/hack/cut through it.

basically yes but the pinout is different so you will need to move the wires accordingly.

 

and yea a hacksaw does work as well as a dremel, just make sure you know where you are cutting.

There is only one pin for the power switch, and one pin for the power LED. The panel uses the Firewire ground to complete the circuits. If you don't add the firewire connections you need to provide a ground path. Look at page 7 of the stickied topic to read the discussion about the front panel pinouts.
