The plan here is to abandon my Quicksilver case idea, OC the C2Q to 3.4 or 3.6 and keep it cold with the liquid cooling system, and add a BlackMagic Decklink HD Extreme card for 4:4:4 Film and Video capture and output for FCP, Vegas, and Premiere Pro (The idea here is to have as versatile a system as possible). The three 750 GB HD's will be a striped RAID3, and I'll use a partitioned Hitachi 500 gig drive for my system drive - dual boot, Vista and Leopard.

The more I think about this, the more attractive this type of system seems to me, as us Editors typically don't run updates all that often unless we've checked to make sure it's not going to destroy any of our software... we keep it set unless there's an important update, then we do our homework, check and make sure it's ok, then install it. The added step of researching the Wiki for the .kext files needed to patch the update (if needed) really doesn't seem like it'd take much more time.

Granted, I'll have to add a few more fans to this system (especially to my stack of hard drives which may end up being a RAID-5 instead, with 5 drives plus a system drive... I'd have to put the system drive in one of the other drive bays, as there are only 5 dedicated HD bays in the case) As for a DVD drive, I haven't settled on one, but it'll probably be a lightscribe dual layer IDE burner.

The real conundrum I have now is, do I sell my G5 to help pay for all this? Or keep it as my renderbox/backup system/household server?

Anyhow, what do you guys think? Is this a foolish idea for a home workstation? Should I just keep saving and spend over twice this much on a Mac Pro? From what I've read, this gear is supposed to be pretty dang stable, and the C2Q is very reliable when OC'd, as long as you keep it cool, which with this particular mobo and cooling system, it should be.

If there's better gear for this purpose that I've missed, please, let me know!

Thanks, and sorry in advance for any silly noob mistakes I make. :)

I'm also considering using the Gigabyte GA-EX38-DS4 Mobo, even though it's more expensive... I've done some searching for people who have tried hackintoshing this board, but haven't found anything related - the search function seems to always give me about 100 threads that are 100 pages long, and apparently have nothing to do with what I'm searching for.
