Partitioning any drive, internal or external, usually relies on an Operating System. The bootable utilities like Acronis don't always know how to find a USB or Firewire drive. Part of this problem is BIOS related. Without a BIOS mapping a drive to the drive interface (INT13), there's sometimes no way to discover its presence.

But some manufacturers (usually of SCSI, but sometimes of Firewire) give DOS or similar drivers to let you find/boot/use their discs without an Operating System.

If the external drive already has data, you must use Acronis or some other disk partitioning software to "compress" or "resize" a partition so that it occupies less space. Once you have free space on the external drive, you may proceed to follow the Wiki "Technical FAQ" regarding preparing a partition for OS X under Windows XP.

OS X (and Windows for that matter) aren't a cinch to install on things other than a completely unused internal drive - complications are normal in these circumstances.
