Help out a Noob? Kext and Kernel Help please

Hey, i just installed kalyway 10.5 w/ the combo update and everything so far (network, sound, graphics, etc) has been working

 

ive been looking around the website and ive been noticing people updating their kernel to 9.2?

how do i get the file and how (step by step, terminal process instruction?) do i install it? and why do i need it?

 

And whats Kext?

I tried looking around for this but all i get is just kext files, dl this and that..

I wanna know what the heck a kext is (all i know is how to use kext helper to get my sound working)

 

 

Does an original MAC OSX have Kext? What is kext? Is it like drivers?
