External USB Hard Drive Installation

Hi All!,

Thank you so much for this incredible forum, and allow me to apologize if I am in some way repeating a previous post / problem. I could not find any relevant post, so here goes.

I am attempting to install Mac OS 10.4.8 SSe2, SSe3 for Intel/AMD on an external hard drive that is connected via USB to my Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop running Vista Home Premium (Intel Core Duo, 2.20 Ghz CPU, 2GB Ram).

I partitioned the external hard drive (Seagate, 320 GB) into three partitions using the management tools available on Vista. The third partition (100GB) I called Mac, and designated it for the Mac.

I redefined my boot sequence to boot from the DVD, external hard drive and internal hard drive in that order.

I installed successfully (or so it seemed) that Mac OS on this partition following the usual steps - erasing and formatting as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I did not install any additional drives (which is sometimes a problem), but followed the default options.

Upon restart at the end of the otherwise successful installation (I ejected the installation DVD, since I had no further use for it now), the computer produced a message that it failed to locate any operating system. I disconnected the external hard drive, restarted the computer, and it started with the usual Vista.

I imagine I missed some obvious but important step. Can anyone help me? I realize the external hard drive installations are difficult, and I could really use your help.

Much Obliged,

Gideon

Well, I had same problem, but I set my internal hard drive to boot first, then my external. The problem I had is that I needed to go into my boot menu and choose my external hard drive to boot from it and it worked just fine. Try that and if it works let me know.
