kubaf
From http://jeremy.visser.name/2007/10/28/osx86/ " However, I could get networking working properly without the need for FireWire/NAT jurgle by using my Gigabyte GN-WB01GS wireless USB dongle. Firstly, I downloaded the RT73 driver for OS X from Ralink's OS X driver page. The driver didn't initially recognise my USB dongle ("No Device!"), so I had a little hacking to do. From the forums, I have learned that drivers (called kernel extensions) store the information about what sort of hardware they are activated for in a file called Info.plist. By editing this file, you can enable the driver for different pieces of hardware. I opened up the Info.plist file for RT73 which was stored at /System/Library/Extensions/RT73USBWirelessDriver.kext/Contents/Info.plist. By previously opening the System Profiler application and finding my USB dongle in the list, I knew that the hexadecimal Product ID for my dongle was 0×8008, and the Vendor ID was 0×1044. The Info.plist file stores these numbers as decimal, not hexadecimal, so the aforementioned IDs are 32776 and 4164, respectively. So, inserted the following chunk into my Info.plist file: <key>Jeremy</key> <dict> <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>com.Ralink.driver.RT73</string> <key>IOClass</key> <string>RT2573USBWirelessDriver</string> <key>IOProviderClass</key> <string>IOUSBDevice</string> <key>bcdDevice</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>idProduct</key> <integer>32776</integer> <key>idVendor</key> <integer>4164</integer> </dict> …which I had modified from one of the existing chunks in the file to include my dongle's Product and Vendor IDs. Upon rebooting and inserting my wireless USB dongle, the Ralink wireless utility popped up and I got onto the network! " Then Under comments: 2. Jeremy Posted November 18, 2007 at 10:22 am | Permalink You'll see that in the Info.plist file, there are similar chunks of code. You really do need to find the right spot to paste it in. In my file, I had to insert it in between lines 23 and 24. I hope you saved a backup of the file, because if you "just copied and pasted at around the beginning of the doc", those line numbers would have changed. As long as the wireless driver supports 10.3, you should be fine. Is it exactly the same device, as in a GN-WB01GS? Just to make sure, you should open System Profiler, go to Hardware → USB, find your dongle, and make sure the device IDs are the same. (You'll need to use the calculator to convert from hexadecimal to decimal.) 3. hoeg Posted May 4, 2008 at 7:21 am | Permalink Thanks for the guidance with the Gigabyte wlan dongle! Got it working with my macbook, but after rebooting I had to manually load the driver kext and then plug in the dongle. So, after I pasted in the .plist sinppet I did the following: cd /System/Library/Extensions kextload RT73USBWirelessDriver.kext After this the Ralink Wireless Utility would launch when I insert the dongle. I seem to have a bit problems with DHCP and the Gigabyte dongle, but atleast with a manually configured IP it works just great. Paul Sanders Posted October 5, 2008 at 6:48 am | Permalink Yep, this worked for me On OSX 10.5 (Leopard) no less. In my case, I have a LinkSys Compact Wireless-G USB adaptor, model WUSB54GC, but it's the same chip (RT73). Vendor ID for this device is hex 13b1 (decimal 5041) and product ID is hex 20 (decimal 32). You have to insert the dongle *after* booting, I found. Make sure you fix permissions under disk utility Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/89117-not-work-wifi-on-usb-gigabyte-gn-wb01gs-wlan-on-chip-rt2571-wf/#findComment-1011864 Share on other sites
