David F
I have a problem connecting USB storage devices to my mac. I have tried two external hard drives, an SD card reader and a couple flash drives. All of these show up in system profiler as being connected to the USB port, and it correctly identifies the device (with hard drive info, etc.). However these devices never show up on either the desktop(or finder) or in disk utility. One hard drive is fat32/HFS+ the other drive is HFS+. They can both be mountd to a Mac via firewire no problem, but not USB. They have worked on the this machine before, and will still work occaisionally when I unplug the drive repeatedly. I think it may have to do with the power requirement of the drives, but they are powered, so I doubt it. Thanks for any help! David F
Some more information: I can make my USB products work until I restart by going into terminal and reloading the IOUSBFamliy.kext and the IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext. However this is just a temporary fix that works mere hours, and I would like to avoid going through terminal everytime I plug in my flash drive. Also I realized that my mouse, which is usb works fine, so the computer is only having trouble with USB storage devices. Again, if anyone has any ideas, let me know. Falcon351
Use the "kextunload" and "kextload" commands in Terminal, with root privileges. Either use "su" to get a root shell or prefix the commands with "sudo". Maheshwaran.S
The solution is simple...all you have to do is to download the latest drivers from Apple Developer connections and install it for leopard. Check out on how to do it in my small how-to post that I wrote.. http://mymindleaks.com/apple/how-to-enable-usb-in-leopard/ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/87945-usb-hard-drive-troubles/#findComment-711870 Share on other sites

vaporATX
I've been having this same issue intermittently on my MBP ever since the 10.5.2 update. My Mini seems unaffected. The ironic part is all my Hack Macs work fine. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/87945-usb-hard-drive-troubles/#findComment-728792 Share on other sites
