OK, so I decided to be brave and try installing Tiger (later, Leopard) on my new Gateway MT6451.

Specs:

AMD Turion X2 1.6GHz

1GB DDR2 RAM

120GB ATA HD

ATI Radeon Xpress 1150

Initially, after I installed and tried to boot, it stopped at the flashing cursor "_" screen forever. I fixed that by installing again, but in Disk Utility partitioning it manually so the disk would have MBR instead of GUID table.

Now, I can get to the prompt where you can specify boot flags. If I leave it, it goes to the gray Apple logo screen, the indicator spins for a couple minutes, then it stops spinning. Have to force shutdown. I can get verbose with -v, single-user-mode with -s, but I cannot get into safe mode with -x.

I remember checking all the ATI video cards to install only, but in -s I go into /System/Library/Extensions and there are no ATI kexts, but there are NVDA kexts. I tried what I found in another thread about moving all the NVDA kexts to another folder, but that didn't change anything.

In verbose mode, it gets to something about mDNS and then LoginWindow.app, but stops after that line. I had suspected a kernel panic before, but don't see anything regarding it.

Additionally, if I boot into -s and try "diskutil repairPermissions /" (or any diskutil function), nothing happens, it makes a blank line and I have to press CTRL-C to get a prompt.

I'd appreciate any help with this.

Thanks,

Josh

Got it working!

How I did it: reinstall (partitioning manually before) but selecting only the JaS AMD ATA package and the other one that you can't deselect. Now I need to get 3d graphics working and dual core detection!
