mtotho
I am about to buy the awesome Asus P5W DH deluxe. I had previously owned this board, and it was an all time favorite. I know im good on the windows side.. but it there anything anyone wants to let me know about this board. I know for the most part this is a great board for leopard.. and I am well able to install and figure out how to get various drivers for it. I see that Lan/Sound works. I also heard Wifi works and possibility of using the remote. I heard many postitive things about it. I am just wondering if there was any little problems i should know about. Also, suggested settings? I am planning on being on Leopard most of the time so I may do GUID scheme with AHCI enabled. All sata ports work correctly.. right? Thanks for any help. I am trying with all my heart to make this post not look like one of those others you see all the time, titled "does this hardware work". I know which hardware works, i know my hardware will work. But as i am about to buy a new board, I can always go with a better one, so i just want opinions on this one. Thanks again. shah123
Everything works except for wifi (only works in tiger) Update bios, use kalyway + guid. You should be good. Make sure you enter the perfect bios settings. I got it right on my fourth installation. Audio needs patching, which isn't a problem. Search/ask around the forums if you get stuck. chuckeroo
I am also considering this board in the near future as I have read lots of good things about compatibility with x86. However, I have been reading review after review of the board dying after short lengths of time. Anyone have any experience with this? mtotho
Thanks i plan to use kalyways install disk.. which comes for an option for the wireless (Specifically for P5W DH) and Audio (Specifially P5w DH) it even has (P5W DH) in parenthesis next to the option. I plan to set simple Bios settings. AHCI and turning off the speedstep and what not. What else did you change? Also i do believe the wireless works in leopard.. there is just a different installer that you dont know of. How about lan? does that work Out of the box? pretty easy to find kextS? do both ports work? thanks I already ordered this board. i will be able to figure everything out.. just nice to know in advanced. shah123
yes stick with simple bios settings. I had endless reboots after installl. I tried to change every possible setting in bios and it then worked. But now I tinkered my bios settings again (I have this habit that I have to know what every function/feature does) and I am having endless reboots again. I will figure that out in a day or two when i get time and post the images here.Kexts are easy to get. http://mckill.caI did not have much luck with wireless. It works for initial few minutes and then drops the connection.I used the realtek drivers from realtek website. I searched intensely for other drivers but I have not been able to find those for wireless.Lan works after the kext update. However you need to add those in network pref pane. My other lan port gets self assigned ip and fails to get dhcp but i am sure that it is because of my router and the board. (linksys and apple doesn't work very well, happens with my powerbook too) But the other port works perfectly.Audio works after kext. You can do software update if you use vanilla kernel with kalyway + guid.Time machine works flawlessly.Let me know/PM me if you need further help. I will be glad to help, because I spent 15 days researching and sometimes figuring stuff out on my own.okay so I tinkered around and managed to get leopard to boot again. If you need any of my kexts/settings let me know.I don't have a camera nearby to take bios shots. But if you get stuck I will be happy to help. Also, don't forget to flash the bios to the latest ROM. Thanks . . would like to add a point or two to the excellent reply from shah123: Leave wireless alone until there is a proper leopard driver/installer from Realtek. If you install from the kalyway 10.5.1 disk it will 1) not work, & 2) drive you up the wall with its utility autolaunching. I would also say that Kalyway 10.5.1 [EFI install] had issues for this P5WDH: there are irregular background HDD accesses which kill performance & the NICs were a bugger to get working. Neither of these were a hassle with any other install [ToH or from the retail DVD]. shah123
Be sure to update your BIOS to the latest rom. Things were a lot easier after the update. Here are my BIOS settings: Also I ended up in a boot loop after installation like many others. I tinkered every possible BIOS setting to get it to work. So if you encounter problems have patience and try to modify your BIOS settings.
