Super Bowl XLII

Fellow InsanelyMacers,

 

I have been waiting for since last night after the conclusion of the Super Bowl for a thread about it to pop up on the forum. It has yet to happen 18 hours later. I have a strong suspicion that since it is a computer forum (and that a large majority of forumites are from other places than the US) that a Super Bowl thread would never get started. So here it goes...

 

I turned on the game at 6:00 PM EST. It was still showing parts of the Fox pregame show, which is completely unwatchable by the way. Terry, Howie, and the other two rambling idiots completely ruin the beginning of any game. Not to mention it is Fox, the great people who brought us shows like American Idol and the highly unpredictable House…

 

Sorry I trialed off, I just threw up a little bit

 

Well back to the game.

 

The first drive by the New York Giants was great. It only ended in a field goal (3 points), but the way they systematically broke down the seemingly old and slow New England Patriots defense. Eli was competing third down passes and Jacobs was acting like the beast of man he is. It was this best start to a Super Bowl ever.

 

Unfortunately, it was followed up by a New England Patriots drive that was somewhat quicker than the New York Giants drive. It ended with a touchdown (7 points) and at this time, New England led New York 7 – 3 and I thought oh noooooooooo!!!!!

 

But then something miraculous happened. The Giants defense took over. During the end of the 2^nd quarter and the entire 3^rd quarter New England quarterback Tom Brady had more consensual contact with the turf than he had all season. The Giants defense led by Michael Strahan was absolutely incredible.

 

Then the 4^th quarter rolls around. Both teams were evenly matched all game long. The score at the beginning of the last and final quarter was still only 7 – 3 New England lead.

 

At this point, I knew that it was the best Super Bowl game I have ever seen, quite possibly the best Super Bowl game ever played. Back to the game…

 

To start the 4^th quarter the Giants were driving and they scored a 5 yard or so touchdown from Eli Manning to Steve Smith. New York was up 10 – 7 and I was ecstatic. I was so beside myself.

 

But then New England got the ball back and started driving down the field. Short passes for big yards to Wes Welker. Then, New York started to miscue. They made a stupid penalty of having 12 men on the field during a Patriots punt. Therefore, the Patriots got a 1^st down and kept driving. Then, a New York linebacker made a pass interference penalty in the end zone. Therefore, New England got the ball on the 1 yard line. New England of course scored and the had the lead I thought, yep, this is were the New York Giants give the game away to the Patriots, it happened in Week 17, I thought it was about to happen again.

 

But then something happened, something that I never in my wildest dreams would think happen, but it did. Eli turned into Peyton and drove his team down the field for the winning score to Plaxico Burress. Yes, it was sloppy. Yes, there was some luck involved with Eli escaping from a mob of Patriots defenders and completing an improbable floater pass to David Tyree. But he still did it. Questionable, shaky, unenthusiastic Eli Manning drove the Giants down the field to win the game.

 

The last Patriots series end up in a 4^th and 20 long desperation attempt that failed.

 

The Giants WON! The Giants WON!

 

I was jumping up and down. I was relieved and exhausted. I was SOOOO HAPPY.

 

I could not face a reality in which the Patriots went undefeated. My 1972 Miami Dolphins could not be compared are even put in the same breath as the lifeless cheating 2000 era New England Patriots.

 

And they weren’t New England choked and lost this game. They lost it and the New York Giants won it.

 

I cannot explain my joy in words. So I wrote this little “article/new topic” just so I can get it off my chest.
