lotus49
I have a Mac running Tiger. I can start X and get run xterms and other X window clients to display on my Mac. What I cannot do it to get the X window chooser or a login screen from my remote Solaris box to appear on the Mac's X server. What I want is a full remote session on my Mac, not just one or two applications. On a Linux box I would run chooser (not to be confused with the old Mac app) but I don't know how to do this on my Mac. I am very familiar with Unix, X and Solaris. I am a lot less familiar with my Mac. I have only been Maccing for a few months. (A side note to this is that I bought a Mac after using the hacked Tiger on a laptop - so much for the dangers to Apple.) Any suggestions would be much appreciated. crazymonkeypants
I don't believe that there is a way to get xdmcp going with the Apple X server at this point. What, specifically are you looking to get out of the deal that you can't get by using a combination of $DISPLAY and ssh's X session forwarding? Have you at least tried starting X manually with the -query argument? lotus49
To answer your first question, when I ran gnome-session over an ssh tunnel it crashed and I suspected it wouldn't if it were started on my Solaris box by gdmlogin. To answer your second, I hadn't tried starting X manually but I should have because it works. My Mac is appearing more Unixy by the minute. Thanks for your suggestion.
