i was able to get the jas 10 4 8 to install on my old dell (dimension 2400).... but for some reason i cant get any color to work... i know its not the dvd, because i tried to get it to install on my other desktop that i built back last november and i would install(with color) but i kept getting the "please restart computer" at the grey apple screen....i dont know the exact specs on the dell... except for that it has an intel cpu... my other desktop has a biostar TF7025-m2 mb, 2 gig ram, amd athalon 64 x2 5000+ unlocked black edition, asus en8500gt top 256mb ddr3, westerndigital 160gb sata hd, ide dvd-r drive, sata dvd-r drive.----- to get it to install on this comp i put my dell 30gb hd which is a westerdigital ide.Please HELP!!!i am a noob at this.... i have searched the forums to try to fix this. Actually i have searched the forums for the past week and that is how i have been able to get this far.... unfortunately i cant find anything about the grayscale....i will try to post a pic here soon... i just got an iphone last month and still havent set up an email for it... let me do that and i will have pics up..here is a pic of the about mac screen

Click on the apple > sys. prefs. > Displays > Colors. Try and adjust those. Mine says Thousands, and Millions.

 

I'd guess that's a graphics card issue.

 

You say the issue isn't with the install DVD, and you've used that DVD with both an Intel and AMD cpu, are you sure you selecting the right kernel option when you're installing? I've found it best to not select any extra graphics patches that come with the JaS install but just install them manually.

 

Seeing as you probably haven't installed many apps or saved critical documents etc., it might be worth your while downloading one of the more recent 10.4.10 or 10.4.11 DVDs. You should be able to find them from the same source that you got the JaS DVD from.
