holden caulfield Posted January 30, 2006 Share Posted January 30, 2006 I have 10.4.1 natively installed and working very well - In anticipation of the new macvidia drivers, I've been spending some time trying to upgrade to 10.4.3 8f1099 a few problems - I burned the pre-patched iso- 1) computer reboots after "hit any key to install..." research has led me to believe that I have no PAE support. I did some reading about enabling PAE through boot.ini with /PAE - - BUT - I have no boot.ini (windows is installed on my E drive - -) my specs: Dell Inspiron 8600 Intel® Pentium® M processor 1400MHz 585 MHz, 512 MB RAM Intel 855PM Chipset Intel® Processor Identification Utility Version: 2.6.20060105 Time Stamp: 2006/01/30 06:08:59 Number of processors in system: 1 Current processor: #1 Processor Name: Intel® Pentium® M processor 1400MHz Type: 0 Family: 6 Model: 9 Stepping: 5 Revision: 5 L1 Instruction Cache: 32 KB L1 Data Cache: 32 KB L2 Cache: 1 MB Packaging: µFCPGA/µFCBGA EIST: Yes MMX: Yes SIMD: Yes SIMD2: Yes SIMD3: No Enhanced Halt State: No Execute Disable Bit: No Hyper-Threading Technology: No Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology: No Intel® Virtualization Technology: No Expected Processor Frequency: 1.40 GHz Reported Processor Frequency: 0.59 GHz Expected System Bus Frequency: 400 MHz Reported System Bus Frequency: 398 MHz Like I said, I have 10.4.1 installed (thanks to the help of ozymandis). The fact is, was going to help me wipe 10.4.1 and install 10.4.3, but I thought I would test my 10.4.3 DVD when I realized it rebooted right away. Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology:no means no PAE support! Is it a real problem that windows is on my E drive and I have no boot.ini??? any help would be greatly appreciated. I think your a bit mistaken... Whats you C:\ partition? holden caulfield Posted January 30, 2006 Author Share Posted January 30, 2006 I am not sure what my C partition is... but the partition xp is E - I dont even have boot.ini tab in msconfig. Funny thing... I have a backup of an old boot.ini... and when I drop it in E:, I get my windows bootloader (using Chain0) after my darwin bootloader. It's quite strange... but there really is no boot.ini Nevertheless, I am pretty sure I am not PAE compatable (as a check on my processor says: Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology: NO but... I applied maxxus patch for 841099 - - and it doesnt reboot automatically now... (as it should if I had no PAE support) - - however, I do get a panic (cpu 0 caller 0xC038C9D3) Unable to find driver for this platform: ACPI - - - Some people seem definite that no PAE=no 10.4.3 ... but some say otherwise... Regarding Windows on Drive E, this is quite normal if you have a working OSx86 partition on the disk and then go and install XP on the same HDD. Windows thinks the C: drive is a screwed up Windows drive (it isn't, it's your type AF OSx installation) so it then says the CD/DVD drive is D: and calls the install drive E: That's what it comes out as after the installation is finished. So - what the Windows installer thinks is the C: drive is actually your OSx86 partition. holden caulfield Posted February 6, 2006 Author Share Posted February 6, 2006 Dowloaded the .dmg - converted and patched myself (Jas 4.2) - - initially ran the installer as an update to 10.4.1 - but eventually screwed up my MBR and lost my ability to boot anywhere - - so I reinstalled XP (corrected the problem with it being on the E drive) - then I did the erase and install option on the os x installer - I will say that the installer went really really slow - just be patient - menus came in frame by frame and the bottons too about 20 seconds to respond.... but - now 10.4.3 is running faster than 10.4.1 did - Dell Inspiron 8600 Pentium M Used Acronis Disk Detector to corrent the HFS+ partition error I got when trying to boot into OS X - but now set up and nicely running the darwin bootloader. happy as a clam. Sienar Posted February 20, 2006 Share Posted February 20, 2006 BTW it is quite possible to not have a boot.ini with XP. It simply defaults to the active partition and boots the os. It's only needed when you have a non-standard setup, or you're dual booting, or you need to pass boot strings for windows.
