I noticed that problem too. When I ran Panther on my Mac mini, the Microsoft Mouse driver fixed the problem, but it doesn't seem to work in Tiger. It technically works, but it doesn't fix the jumpiness. However, there is a solution. At first I thought I was going crazy. Instead of smooth linear acceleration like in Windows, OS X uses some wierd stair-step curve.

I remember somebody posting about this problem in another forum and nobody knew what the dude was talking about. This "problem" affects all machines running OS X, it's just that not everybody notices it. Personally I've gotten used to it, but if it's driving you nuts, the link above will hopefully help out.

On a side note, I think Apple made it like this intentionally, probably to suit the needs of graphic artists, giving them more contorol over pixel-by-pixel movement, but more speed when moving to a different general area. Either that, or Apple just botched the mouse driver.
