installation successful osx goes to black screen

hi guys

i just installed Jas 10.4.8 mac os x on a dell intel

installation went smooth and all and when it got done installing, it gave the message system will restart in 30 sec and there was a restart button

i hit restart

it restarted and went into a black screen

thats it

 

i installed it on a Dell XPS 400

250g HD

and 1GB ram

 

 

ATI video card

 

i shut down the computer and turned it back on it didnt even show the Dell logo or start up bios thing

its just a plain black screen and my monitor seems to be in a sleep mode it wont come up i even tried to put windows xp back in the DVD rom to try to boot in it

and still no luck

 

anyone out there knows whats going on and willing to help
