Does anybody know how to fix the Q6600, 2.4ghz Unknown in "about this mac"?

Requires a simple edit of the 'AboutThisMac.strings' file. You can use textedit. Here's how:

Go to /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app

Right click and click "Show Package Contents" on loginwindow.app

Once inside loginwindow.app, go to /Contents/Resources/English.lproj

You should see a file called "AboutThisMac.strings" inside English.lproj

Drag a copy to your desktop and open it up with TextEdit

Depending on weather you have a single or dual processor, scroll down to one of the following lines of code:

Single Processor scroll down to the following code

CODE/* final UI with a description of the processor (e.g. "600 MHz PowerPC G3") */

//"ABOUT_BOX_SINGLE_PROCESSOR_FIELD_FORMAT" = "Processor: %@";

"ABOUT_BOX_SINGLE_PROCESSOR_FIELD_FORMAT" = "%@";

"ABOUT_BOX_SINGLE_PROCESSOR_L3CACHE_FORMAT" = "%@ L3 cache";

Dual Processor scroll down to the following code

CODE/* final UI with a description of the processors (e.g. "Dual 800 MHz PowerPC G4")

//"ABOUT_BOX_MULTIPLE_PROCESSORS_FIELD_FORMAT" = "Processors: %@";

"ABOUT_BOX_MULTIPLE_PROCESSORS_FIELD_FORMAT" = "%@";

"ABOUT_BOX_MULTIPLE_PROCESSORS_L3CACHE_FORMAT" = "%@ L3 cache per processor";

Edit the red area inside the quotes so that it matches your processor. For example "2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad"

Replace the original with your edited version, repair permissions and you're done. You do not need to reboot for the changes to take place.

Thanks, But Does it still recognize it correctly even though the name is wrong? Or the name isnt important?

In my experience it's not important. The Q6600 doesn't have any chip specific features that an os would need to be aware of to run propperly. It pretty much runs as two core 2 duos as far as most things are concerned.

Now your mobo is a different story, make sure all of it's core infrastructure is supported or you will run into problems.

Look at Activity Monitor in Utilities and you should see all 4 cores working (4 Graphs).

Thanks BJ, just did the Edit and now my 'About This Mac' is more aesthetically pleasing.

Glad you got your BADAXE 3vilution. Are you happy with it?

I just bought a 2.66 MacPro and have done some benchmarks tonight against my Q6600(3Ghz)/Badaxe Hackintosh and the MacPro does lag behind whilst encoding video.

You mean in the bios right? make sure core multiplexing is turned on? Thats all i can think of..
uh .... well sure. But I was actually referring to the mobo architecture itself. If your mobo has board specific hardware or architecture, that can very often lead to complications.Make sure you're not just focusing on your processor if you're having problems other than X not reporting your CPU by name.

It's the RAM in the Mac Pro server mobo. DDR2 800 and up is far superior in my opinion. But hey, you get a mac pro filled up with even that {censored} ram and you might not notice.

Yeah, and the damn RAM is soooooo expensive too. I've got 3Gb in it but there is very little Page Outs and Swaps. Do you really think that 'filling it up' would really make that much of an improvement? ( Sorry to hi-jack your thread 3vilution :-) )

I have never got the Mic-in to work and in the end bought an Edirol UA-25 USB SoundBox. Analog in and out and Digital too but Edirol say it doesn't support the sleep/wake function on the Mac so two steps forward and one step backwards !

Well it depends, if I remember right, Final Cut is a 32 bit program still. That being the case, go to at least 4 gb. And don't buy apple ram. You can get server ram that's just as good and half the price at newegg, some are even thermally superior to apple's ram.

You can get the exact specs of the ram off of apple's Mac Pro specs page.

Thankyou, I've never had much luck with 3rd party Ram in 'Older Macs' so didn't imagine things had improved but will have a bash. Crucial seem to sell it quite cheaply too and as I just had a little look inside there is 2Gb of Crucial RAM in there already.

Incidently I benchmarked the Hack against the MACPro using FCP and it was quicker on the Hack with 4Gb but Handbrake actually encodes quicker on the Real Mac. How weird is that ??

There's probably just some optimizations that work on the True Mac but don't work on the Mack.
