Hii'm a noob to osx86 and have been using this site and forums etc a lot and have had success so may i start by saying thanks to everyone.

I have an asrock conroe 1333, 667 inten core 2 duo with 2gb ram and an nvidia 6600gt pci-e. 250 gb sata 2 drive (maxtor), 160gb maxtor on IDE master and a DVDRW on slave - only one IDE channel.

3 empty SATA2 ports

1. initially tried to instal the Jas 10.4.8 via DVD which failed on vmware (yes i edited the config files and added paevm etc) and as a standalone install

2. success with the leopard-flat-img 10.5.0 install using dd

3. ZUZA revealed how to increase the partiton size with the diskMerge.i then had IDE - macosx 10.5 leopardsata2 vistaunattended boot - biios programmed to go to the sata2 drive and vistafor leopard, needed to press f11 and choose drivecouldn't use easy BCD to dual boot, when i tried to add macosx NST, it asked for a drive letter which wasnt seen in vista so i resigned myself to manually booting leopard when needed.

4. used an external USB drive (80GB) to install 10.5.0 - success again

5. tried to use software update/macupdate (expecting to fail) on the USB drive. strangely, it booted showing 10.5.1 so i thought yaay. when i tried to boot the IDE drive - that had failed...had the installation gone for my IDE drive instead of the USB drive????

6. re-installed 10.5.0 using dd on teh IDE drive - success

7. tried to update USB drive to 10.5.1 macupdate after disconnecting the ide drive. had to make partition active from vista, but it failed anyway. never approached darwin bootloader, just a blinking cursor.

8. downloaded toh sse2 rc2 DVD

9. reinstalled 10.5.0 onto USB drive

10 (IDE still disconnected) installed ToH's DVD onto USB drive - success and showed 10.5.1

11 reconnected IDE, disconnected USB. Used ToH 10.5.1. DVD on IDE drive - success!. shows up as 10.5.1 and kept all my installations / settings. So thats how i did it. i think i needed to get into vista at step 11 to make the partition active.

12 installed macdrive on vista, Easy BCD now recognised booting optins as disk and partition selection rather than drive letter option, i mean, it says to boot to c: but on the OSX bit, the option to boot the partition/disk appeared - not sure how (???new version)

13 tried booting external 10.5.0 onto my wifes compaw presarion v6000 - success but not recognised the intel pro ve 1000 network card or the wireless card. 10.5.1 installation didnt boot - gets to the blue screen and waits for ages. (at least 15 mins - should i wait longer?)

14 in the process, i learned the options for bootloader, kexts and sudo chmod and sudo chown etc. i had very limited experience with mandrake whose organisation i couldn't quite understand (i am too used to windows i presume) but apple seemed to be a nice compromise.

Hope this helps people understand that the intel pro ve1000 network driver is a big stumbling block and the wireless one for that laptop is as well.
