'HFS+ partition error' when installing on USB drive

I'm trying to install MacOS X 1.0.4.8 unto an external USB drive, from a Lenovo ThinkPad Z61p laptop.

 

The install DVD recognized the external USB drive fine. Using the Disk Utility, I can create a partition on, and install goes through fine. After rebooting, I get 'error loading booter'. Though luck.

 

Running fdisk -i /dev/rdisk5 creates a boot and an HFS+ partition. I install on the HFS+ partition, reboot, and get the same. But re-running fdisk -i /dev/rdisk5 brings me to another point: now I get 'HFS+ partition error' when trying to boot off the drive.

 

This is even though you can mount the partition fine when booting from the install DVD.

 

I searched the forum archives and the net, saw some recommendations, but nothing really helped.

 

I wonder how to go forward from here...

there's an option in easybcd that fixes that.

I see easycbd is a Windows application. fortunately I don't run Windows, so I guess that's not an option.

 

but is it really so that the MacOS installer can't create a proper partitioning / mbr setup? talk about user friendlyness
