southbay
Howdy folks, my first post in this forum, hoping to get some light shed on a specific topic. I have an Inspiron 9100 PM 1.6 1GB RAM SSE SSE2 NO PAE Here's my short questions. Several people have posted supposed success with NO PAE but with SSE2. My question, is this true? I need the help of the great GURU's out there to fill me in. I am so anxious to run OSX on my LAPTOP I can't sleep. But also, I can't get any straight answers. So, if this is so, and your a NO PAE OSX on the PC user, please email me. I need to know which installation to use, and the steps to do it. I'm from way back in the Apple II days (live in Silicon Valley) about 10 minutes from Apple. I would be eternally greatful if someone could help with this. Thanks a bunch guys.....This looks to be an interesting year! bloodroot
I'm trying to figure out the same. It looks like win2osx.net is the place, but they're down. There's a long thread on the subject, though googles only cached one of the pages google for pae reboot problems Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7356-pae-or-no-pae-that-is-the-question-need-help/#findComment-45935 Share on other sites
MikeBee
Right chaps. Here's the deal with my machine: Dell D600 Pentium M 1.6 -> CPU has no PAE. I was running 10.4.1 fine from the Deadmoo image, but wanted to run 10.4.3, so downloaded the image and patched with Jas 4.2b ppf. Mounting the image in vmware and trying to install that way was a no show as vmware would moan about the lack of pae.... But, when I burned the image to DVD and booted native it worked a charm. Am now running 10.4.3 just as well as 10.4.1 and tbh it feels much the same. Can you tell me the process, in some steps? (.e.e which image you converted to DVD and installed native? My buddy is a VMWare junky, but I never care for it (slowness). At least at that time (several years ago) I played around with VMWare a little bit. I spent about $1500.00 on my Inspiron about a year ago, and can't afford a new PC. This would be the greatest if I had a simple guide my Pal and I could go with to make it an easy transition, multi-system. Any help again, is really appreciated. VaiOSX
As far as i know : Pentium M @900Mhz (code named "Banya") doesn't have PAE at all (it is really broken). It only supports SSE2, which is enough to run 10.4.1. (forget 10.4.3 and more) Pentium M @1.6Ghz (code named "Dothan") doesn't have "officially" PAE. It's not true because i can successfully install all the OS X Intel versions from 10.4.1 to 10.4.5. In fact the PAE is broken but (for a reason that only Jas and Maxxuss could answer) it seems that it is not really disabled. If you have a Dothan version of the Pentium M, you will be able to install OS X 10.4.3 and more, only in Native Mode (VM Ware says that it has no PAE, even if it's already activated in VMWARE vmx prefs or boot.ini /PAE). Silicon Valley
Ok, so VMWare no, and native install yes. Only one question. Which image should I use then. If you installed 10.4.1 - 10.4.3 with no problems, thats great. I just need to know which image to install, and when you say NATIVE, I'm assuming you mean from the built in CD? I installed 10.4.4 this morning with the GHOST 8.0 image from Canada on my Fujitsu Lifebook (N6010) but it doesn't recognize the DVD-RAM drive, nor the Ethernet (GIGABIT ethernet) or the sound, or the Athero Wireless. Makes this machine pretty useless unless I wanna spend a ton of money on accessories, and then it's not a laptop anymore. I will give a shot to installing on the Inspiron. Which image would your recommend since that system (Inspiron 9200) only has SSE2, and I don't think I've gotten that one from the torrents yet. If that doesn't work, I'm going to say screw it, and I'm gonna build an INTEL 915GUXL with a 3.2 in it. It's one of the only ones on the HCL that "EVERYTHING WORKS". The lowest cost I could find on the web was around $102.00 for the motherboard, and then I think the 3.2 is close to $200.00. I have an HP200I DVD single layer for reading and general purpose burning which the HCL says is compatible with Patch4 or something to that effect. It has the latest Intel Extreme Graphics, Superific Accellerated video card which will be more than enough for me, since I really want to use it for IWORK and ILIFE apps. I think with a GIG or ram and all my price may be around $400.00 for a nice fast WoZx 10.4.4 machine. As a side note, I wonder if Apple is looking at the fact that people in the Windows community love ITunes so much and the players, maybe Steve is moving in the right direction by making it very possible to run every one of his IWORK ILIFE, etc. etc programs on the PC side. Maybe some day in the future he will release OSX Intel v1.01. The reason for the .01 is because version 1.0 will have a major bug that directs you to the Microsoft Update page........snicker.... Thanks for the help, and just let me know which file to get for the Inspiron and I'll give it a shot. antrunix
My Dothan according to Everest has to PAE enabled. But in reality it has according to FreeBSD system. So, I installed 10.4.4...fairy tale, isn't? Silicon Valley
Nothing surprises me at this point. I still contemplate just buying like an Apple Mini, but I don't want a system with a cheezy 40gig 4200rpm drive. That's always kind of been my only beef with Apple. I can live with the Steve Jobs attitude, we all have our trademarks (of course his attitude is Copyright 1980, Apple Computer Inc.". This is why he needs to share at least his applications for Windows users like me. I can't justify paying twice or more for a system I can get the same performance on for over half the price. I just price out a Shuttle PC online, with a 3.2 P4 775 chip, and everything that's compatable on the HCL list. The total cost with 1GB RAM, 250GB HD, and DVD Dual Layer for around $600.00. If I combo all the items at my local Fry's, I can probably get out for the same price or less with tax. This is where Apple is making their mistakes. They keep themselves under performing and over priced. Heck they barely keep the newer models long enough and they're on to the next "new and great, fantastic breakthrough" like the Mac Mini. The only problem is, it's like a cheap mini AT board running on old pinball machine parts (is that from Back to the Future?). Jobs needs to step up and broaden Apple's horizons, and really get the HYPE going again for Apple. bilditup1
The fact is, whether or not 10.4.3 will work on a non-PAE Pentium M varies from person to person. It worked for my first generation Fujitsu P7010D and various others have also reported success. (Of course, if you're talking about running 10.4.1 on a widescreen 855gme, forget it, cuz you wont have any support, period.)
