Cdnalsi
Alright, so I'm not from the states, but I'll travel there next year (January). Say I go in Downtown Miami and wanna buy an iPhone. 1) When in the actual store, would I need to fill info such as home address and all that {censored} and sign some papers for the 2 year plan with AT&T? The reason I'm asking this is because I don't live in the states, I don't care about the plan. I've heard mixed stories about people going in an Apple store and when buying the iPhone they asked for your details along with credit card info and made you sign some papers for the AT&T plan. OR, I heard stories that the plan doesn't actually kick in until you ACTIVATE your iPhone - and that's the process where you have to fill-in all your details and such. So basically you go in the store, pay the $$, and walk out with an iPhone. What to believe? 2) If the answer for the above question is no, then where/how can I get my phone unlocked? That meaning I want to use it with some other company (vodafone) And is there still a chance to get your iPhone bricked when doing that? Would love for someone to clear this issue up for me if possible! Cheers! Danyel
Hi Cdnalsi: From reading and listening to news about Apple's iPhone, I came up with few observations. According to Apple or AT&T, around 250,000 out of 2 million iPhones have gone unactivated. They feel that most of these unactivated iPhones have been "unlocked" to work on other networks. To help combat this issue, Apple Stores do not accept cash and limit iPhone purchases to two (2) per person. Additionally, Apple has released several updates to stop people from "unlocking" (using on other networks) and "jail breaking" (using 3rd party applications). Some people have reported their iPhones being "bricked" (or non-functional) after updating their "unlocked" iPhone. http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/10/28/a...-to-a-customer/ http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/iphone-fi...ideo-304497.php Personally, I don't have an iPhone but these are things I've heard on my PodCasts and Newscasts. Can someone that had a bricked iPhone confirm this happened? Cdnalsi
Yeah, I knew about the bricking when updating, I was asking about bricking when unlocking... So what you're saying is that I have no obligation to use the AT&T sim UNTIL I actually activate the thing? (being able to unlock it in the mean time) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/72627-couple-of-questions-about-buying-an-iphone/#findComment-514337 Share on other sites
Winblows
Yea... When you purchase the phone, as they said in the other reply, it can't be bought with cash and limit two per person(s). Upon actually purchasing the phone it comes deactivated.. Sim is already inserted. The phone is not activated until you personally connect it via USB and sync it with iTunes on your computer and follow the steps it comes up with. So you can purchase the phone and from what I understand, certain update versions still work with it being jail broken (unlocked). Which? I'm not sure. _loosh_
So, how do you put your existing sim card in it? Can the one in the phone be removed? _loosh_ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/72627-couple-of-questions-about-buying-an-iphone/#findComment-515166 Share on other sites
Winblows
From what it looks like.. no.. I've pulled and pushed and yanked and pretty much about broke the phone in half trying to get the cover, or what would be the cover off.. I'm not sure how people accomplish it.. I hear you get a 300 charge limit then it has to end up being sent off to Apple for battery replacement & all that.. Someone posted a thread on here about how they attempted to open their iPhone but ended up touching something in the wrong spot and it went up in black smoke.. So that question is still a mystery to me of how people swap sims Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/72627-couple-of-questions-about-buying-an-iphone/#findComment-515428 Share on other sites
