why doesn't application X work?

I installed the deadmoo (Tiger 10.4.1) image on vmware, got networking working. All seemed well, boots just fine. So I decided to install Fink. Doesn't work with a very strange error message.

 

Now here is the error message I get when trying to install Fink 0.8.1-Intel Installer.pkg:

 

Fink installer: This installer is for i386 machines, not x86. Bailing out.

 

What's that all about?

 

and this is true of all apps I have downloaded this far.
