Hello.

My startup disk has crashed for the 3rd time now and I'm getting tired of reinstalling the OS every time, so I wonder if there is any way to repair it without reformatting and all that hassle..?

I know that DiskWarrior is a tool for this purpose, but unfortunately the disc will only boot from PowerPC computers... ;)

Anyone with a tip for the norwegian fool?

Thanks in advance :)

If you start up your computer with the installation DVD you shall be able to use "Disk Utility" on this purpose.

On "how-to" read its help ("Repairing disks").

Just to clarify - it's very highly unlikely that your hard drive "crashed". If it had, you'd smell smoke and it would be useless now (permanently). A hard drive crash means the physical drive mechanism has burned out or similar.

What you experienced was certainly a problem with the data on your drive either being corrupt, or as it turns out with some hardware conflict which had nothing to do with your hard drive at all. But when you say your drive "crashed" then next thing we expect to read is that the fire department came and took a hose to your computer! :-)

It's just a small bone of contention to me - many newer users don't know what a crash is. A computer crash (as opposed to a hard drive crash) means your computer's operating system and applications have done something wrong to the point where it hangs, blue screens, reboots, or does some other crazy thing. But hard drive crashes are VERY VERY rare - like most people will never experience one. Ever.

Cheers - hope that helps to clarify some common terminology for ya.

No offence intended - this should just be a little bit of information for you or anyone reading to make sure you describe a problem with your computer's operation accurately which will, in the end, help others diagnose the problem.

Thanks for clearing my mess up, dkelly! :)

I was merely quoting what MacDrive told me in Windows XP...

About my solution, I wasn't quite clear there either.

I don't know the correct term for this kind of problem (the one that tends to come when OS X isn't shut down the right way), but I couldn't boot from the OS X harddrive, so I tried to boot from the install DVD to run diskutil, but that didn't work either. However, the solution to the latter problem prooved to be easy, just removing the USB storage device.

Then the Install DVD booted up nicely, and I ran a disk repair in diskutil, and it all went smooth.

Sorry for the inconvenience, fellas! :)

System preferenes pan crashes when i try to open the "startup disk" utility

I am on 10.4.5 Any Help ??

I have XP and OSx86 10.4.5 on 2 separate HDD's. Besides that my OSx86 doesn't boot without the DVD inside I have to change the hard drive boot order in windows to change systems. Is quite anoying. I would love a boot loader; I tryed them all, none work.

And this startup disk crashes, I'm still starting it from time to time , hoping it won't crash LOL.

See attached the complete error report.

Any booting specialists?
