Have been encountering the same issue over and over (kernel stack fault) while testing a VMWare install of a JaS 10.4.8 release.

Dell DM051 (Dimension 5150)

Intel Pentium D 820 2.79GHz (Dell i945G chipset)

2gb DDR2 (266MHz)

128mb ATI Radeon X300

250 gb SATA (although I have a 20gb UATA to throw in if necessary)

Windows XP Professional

VMWare workstation 6 (build 45731)

JaS 10.4.8 Intel SSE3 Only DVD

I have read and followed various guides extensively, tried numerous suggestions that seemed to work for other who encountered the same problem, but none of them worked for me. This is either an IDE or a CPU issue from what I'm able to understand?

Also, I checked the hardware compat. lists but I'm not on there.. just wondering if this is even possible as far as anyone knows, or if someone with a similar setup has had a successful install? I'll keep reading and trying.. but if I'm wasting my time it would be best to know sooner than later ;-) Should I say heck with the VMWare install and install directly to the system (can no do now but perhaps later...)?

Thanks all!

Seems I missed a line in pcwiz's guide

"Note: If you are using a JaS 10.4.8 image without PPF1, the image will not boot in VMware."

Well there it is then, I have the wrong version to do a vmware install. I'll test a direct system install and if I'm successful I'll update this thread for posterity.

Install it natively, vmware is slow and dual boot it. OSX is very easy to get going on that box, since I have the same one, except I have a 7600GT vid card. You're probably better off using the onboard GMA 950 then mess around with that old ATi X300. If you took out your vid card, the only things you would need to do after creating a partition and installing OSX, is to mod the Intel Pro 100/VE ethernet and use Taruga's HDApathcer 1.16 to get the sound working. Then you're done. It don't get much easier than that.

Also, stick with Tiger for now because the GMA950 has issues in Leo and the ATi card you have is no longer supported in Leo with Intel. The X300 kexts are compiled for PPC only.
