Hi jainmac:

With Tiger (10.4), I am able to READ files on my Vista or XP Partition (NTFS), but I am not able to WRITE unless they are FAT32 Partitions. I have an External Hard Drive with FAT32 Partition for backing up files.

I'm not sure if this has changed with Leopard (10.5). Can anyone comment?

This is the same for both Tiger and Leopard.

The Vista partition will be formatted as NTFS and Mac OS X is HFS+. As far as I know, you cannot install Vista on a FAT32 partition. Mac OS X can read, but not wirte NTFS. So you will be able to copy files from the Vista partition, you just cannot copy files to the partition. You can install third-party software like MacFUSE and NTFS-3G that will allow you to read and write NTFS partitions in OS X; the speeds are relatively slow.

Vista will not be able to read or write your OS X HFS+ partition without installing MacDrive.

Both OS X and Windows are able to read and write to FAT32 without installing third-party software.
