xstatik
If I'm using a 8f1111 build, which patch should be using? Jas or Wesley? If I'm using 8F1099 build, is the Maxxus patch the only one for this build? Which builds are preferred? I gather 8f1111 is the newer one, but I gather some people have complained about performance issues. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. xstatik
Ahh.. sorry. I'm going to be using Vmware 5.0 on a Dell Optiplex GX260 running Windows XP Pro SP2 Processor Intel Pentium 4 Processor speed 2260 MHz Processor socket type mPGA 478 Frontside bus speed 533 MHz Motherboard Dell OEM Chipset Intel 845G RAM installed 512 MB The processor supports SSE2, but not SSE3. I'm pretty sure if supports PAE, but I haven't done full diagnostic of the CPU yet. I'll download some of the diagnostic tools suggested on this site, and run a full check before attempting to do an install under Vmware. I just wanted to get a feel for what patches people are using with the appropriate builds, and there reaons for choosing one patch over an other. regularg0nz0
Wow! odd. That's almost exactly my hardware. You're probably not going to get the integrated video to work. Comes out in 16-shades-of-gray. Scary, but if you've installed OS-X a few times, you can make it through the install process. I grabbed a half-height ATI-9600 generic for the video. If you take off the back-plate, it fits nicely in the AGP slot, and Dell is nice enogh to include the extra plastic-bracket to hold the card in place. I also went on ebay and bought one of the Hercules 5.1 USB audio dongles. I hate (read that as "HATE!!!!") messing with sound drivers on any system, and $20 was the right price. The GX260 has so amny USB2.0 ports, anyways... you know? Mine's just a 2 ghz beastie, but for what we're doing, I doubt there will me much benchmark difference in our machines. The 10.4.1 DVD that's out there installs natively. I've gotten the 10.4.3 Wesley patch DVD to install, but it's buggy as hell. I'll make sure and keep you updated as I discover more stuff. Do the same for me, ok? (we seem to be the only 2 people that have dell GX 260's, see...) -Gonzo Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/6834-which-patch-should-i-use/#findComment-42244 Share on other sites
xstatik
Hi Gonzo, Thanks for the reply. I'm using the GX260 at my work. My home home workstation is an AMD Athlon 2500 CPU, with no SSE2/SSE3 support. From what I can glean from the Dell web site there are two flavours of the GX260. I'm not sure exactly what variant my one is, as I'm writing this from home. When I get back to work I'll double check the exact specs of my machine and compare them to yours. So far these are the steps I have taken. Over the last few days I've realised that some of these steps have errors in them, hence why my final install does not complete properly. But if this helps you in comparing with your installation notes, it might be useful to the both of us. Software: Windows XP Pro SP2 with all current patches installed via Windows Update Vmware Build is 5.0.0-13124 EDIT: Removed content violating DMCA However, at the time I hadn't realised the image was already patched, so I continued on with the installation under Vmware. Burned the image to a DVD -RW disc Fired up VMware, created a new virtual machine using: "Other" for both OS & Version Set the amount of ram to 328MB Bridged networking Buslogic > create new virtual disk > IDE > allocate space now 6.5GB Name the disk file "osx.vmdk" Started the vmware session. OS X boots from the DVD drive. Press the enter key at the initial text screen. Apple logo appears Circle with cross appears some 30-40 seconds later. Blue screen appears with OS X mouse pointer spinning. OS X installation screen appears in full colour! Mouse pointer moves smoothly, menus are quite responsive. Everything looks great. I run the disk utility. Create a Journalled 6.5GB partition and call it "Tiger" I can run the repair/check functions over the partition and the disk utility is happy with it. I then quit out of the disk utility and return the OS X installer. Select the defaults for the install. The installer then checks my DVD image, and completes the check without any errors. The installation begins, and around an hour later I get almost to the end. Just before completion, I get an error message saying that there was "an error with the installation" and a dialogue box appears asking me to quit the install or restart. The restart option forces me to choose a start up disk before restarting. Only the DVD image appears, my Tiger partition does not. I then quit out of the restart application, return to the installer screen and then stop the installation. I do a power cycle in Vmware. Vmware attempts to boot from the "Tiger" partition, the HDD light flickers for a bit and then I get a "B0 error" and that's it! EDIT: Removed content violating DMCA I presume this is one of the more current that people are using. This looks to be an unpatched image, from which I could add the Jas or the Wesley patches to before burning to DVD and attempting to use in VMware again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
