Yes, absolutely...have done this with both Firewire and USB2 external drives. External drive will mount and show up on the desktop just like on a Cupertino-Mac.

I DID have a problem with Mac OSX86 recognizing the built-in Firewire on a Gateway, but no problems with a Firewire PCI card or built-in USB2.

We have the same motherboard, what chipset of firewire (PCI Card) did you use?

This is how the card shows up in Apple System Profiler. It was just a card I pulled out of an older G3 Beige.

I THINK it is an NEC chipset, but I suspect you'd have to hunt for a Firewire card that would NOT work!

I've searched for the device Id it's Lynx with Texas Instrument chipset, gotta get one of those :(
