I have successfully installed the JaS 10.4.8 SSE 2 on to my Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop with the nVidia FX Go5200 chip, I have installed the downloaded "Alllaptop.zip" which enabled full resolution at up to 1400 x 1050, with no windows tearings and distortions. However, mouse/cursor movement became very unstable, it stutters, jumps, skips, goes haywire, etc.!! Does anyone, who also has the same laptop, has a working solution? Actually, has this happened to anyone out there?

Thank you in advance! Any comments or suggestions are welcome and much appreciated.

I finally found out the cause. Its the CPUs' hyperthreading (Pentium 4). After disabling it, or should I say enabling only 1 CPU, fixes the mouse stuttering and thus a very speedy, highly usable Macspiron!

To do this, one will need to add "cpus=1" in the com.apple.Boot.plist file.

Location of the file is here: /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist.

Use Terminal to load the file, find the tag <key>Kernel Flags</key>, right below it, enter <string>cpus=1 idlehalt=0</string>.

Save it out and fix with the root:wheel permission. Restart.

One strange thing is that I cannot get Adobe CS 3 to run, all the apps, such as Photoshop, crashed instantly after execution. However, CS2 works just fine.

My Dell Inspiron 5160 is now fully working with the exception of two things. 1) Modem port, 2) PCMCIA port.

Modem port isn't really used at all, so I don't care much about. But I would like to get the PCMCIA slot working so that I can use a memory card reader that inserts into the slot. I will keep looking into this by searching the web. However, if you happen to be reading this and have a fix for it, please provide your help. Very much appreciated.

I've been using my hackintosh, or macspiron, or simply a MacPC for more than a week now, and noticed that PHOTOSHOP behaves pretty strangely. To make it simple, it works at full speed for a few seconds, and then drops down to very irrepsonsive for a few secondes, and then backs up to full speed. The performance is like this as long as I am using PHotoshop and only using it. Otherwise, my machine runs at top speed with no lags all the time. I am using CS 2, because CS 3 refused to run. THen I installed Macromedia Fireworks 8, it runs at full speed at all times, without the dropping and climbing.

I will have to stick with Fireworks then, but its just weird. There are functions that I need from Photoshop that I cannot find in Fireworks... Bummer!

So I did a bit of digging into the Photoshop folder, and found this plugin named multiprocessor support, or something similar, I removed it by dragging it out onto the desktop. Started Photoshop CS 2 again, this time, I didn't notice the performance ups and downs anymore, but it seemed pretty steady and constant in responsiveness. Without a doubt, taking away the multiprocessor support plugin fixes the problem, which makes perfect sense because one of the "CPUs" has been disabled, remember that line that says "cpus=1" above? This is the culprit.

Now I am back on to the Photoshop land, but Fireworks seems like a very nice app to use as well.

I was wondering how 3D performs on this Dell Inspiron with Mac OS X 10.4.8 installed, so I threw in Luxology's Modo, guess what, it ran very smoothly, and surprisingly fast! I would say the app's performance seems even better than Photoshop, in terms of responsiveness.

Because its a Pentium 4 HT 3.06Ghz laptop with 1 CPU thread disabled, things look good still, now if this was a better machine with one of the latest Intel CPUs, things would have been smoking...! For now, I am pretty happy with it, although the PCMCIA slot is still not working, and it doesn't seem like there is a fix for it.

Just wondering how you got this installed onto the Inspiron. I have a 5160 also, and have had no luck putting Leopard on it yet. Maybe I have to install Tiger first, and then upgrade? All help is appreciated.

EDIT: Got it working, now am trying to fix the stuttering cursor....so far, it works great.

Disabling the Hyper-Threading from the cmos setup does the trick as well.

Can someone post his EDID parameters for this laptop?

I have no EDID configs and I run at 1024x768.

I wonder if having the correct EDID will enable the dual-monitor over this laptop.

Also, I am looking forward to find a way to make the screen go to sleep.. i mean, when i let the laptop shut down the screen, the whole screen is white. Will the correct EDID fix this issue?
