Oh no it's me again

Hoping for a clue here although this is definitely not specifically OSX related.

My 2.5inch USB HD (in a SATA case) fails to mount on the BadAxe 2, neither in OSX nor in Mandriva, Ubuntu and openSuse. The HD is working fine on other Linux and OSX machines.

I tried about all BIOS settings concerning USB, ie disabled legacy support, tried all the different options how the drive is handled (fixed, removable etc). I tried all USB ports on the board, by selectively disconnecting other devices and so forth.... no joy at all.

When I plug it in, the LED comes on but it doesn't spin up. When I hold it to my ear I hear a fast ticking noise, as if there's a detonator in there

At first I thought it's knackered but it works just fine on the 6 other machines I've tried. Also on my old Intel 945 mobo it worked fine. It almost seems like it's not getting enough power. I don't know...

btw my other USB HD which is a 3.5 in an IDE case works fine.

Any hint what I might have overlooked or what else I could try is very welcome.

cheers

sol

Solaar, do you mean this is a combo usb/sata case? Or an SATA drive in a USB case? Does the case have an option to either receive power from the usb slot or be plugged into the wall? Have you tried different usb ports? I seem to remember someone having difficulty getting enough power from the extra motherboard connections as opposed to the rear, built-in slots. I have an 80gb, 2.5", Western Digital Passport drive that self powers from any of the usb ports. Do you have other things that might be drawing power from the usb buss?

Hi BJ, this is a SATA drive in a USB case. It's super simple, USB only as for I/O, no switch, no external power, just a status LED.

I tried all the USB ports, rear, front, you name it ;)

I tried it without any other USB device. No luck.

(The other USB case that works fine is for 3.5 IDE drives but it even requires external power through a wall wart. That's why I thought it might be a power issue.)
