Hello,

I need some help installing Mac OS x86 to an external hard drive. It's actually an internal drive in an external enclosure.

Dell Inspiron 9100

Intel P4 3Ghz

1GB ram

ATI mobility radeon 9800 - 256MB

External HDD is 160GB USB/FW

I patched the 8f1111 iso file with Jas's 4.2b patch, and then burned it to a DVD. I used the "Install to USB Drive" guide on wiki, using the FW port (supposed to be easier). So, I booted to the DVD, and installed it the external HDD using the firewire port. Then it told me to reboot. According to the guide, I'm supposed to switch from the FW to the USB when I want to boot to the external HDD. So I tried that, and it just hung there with a blinking cursor. (Also tried booting with FW, but bios does not recognize drive) So, I installed Acronis Boot manager and booted to the HD using the USB port. It loads to mac os and then tells me to that I need to reboot the computer. Everytime I reboot, it tells me to reboot again. I don't know what to do now. I've tried re-installing it again, and I get the same message. I've tried using the -s command, but in the end it goes back to the original installer menu. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or has anyone successfully installed to an external drive? If so, can you post a detailed guide? Thanks

I managed to successfully install 10.4.3. I deleted all partitions on the external drive and formatted it to NTSF with partition magic and set it to active. Then I connected with the firewire cable and used the disk utility to format to HFS. I tried just using the USB cable, but for some reason, when I tried to format the drive, the installer would just hang. Anyways, I quit the installer, plugged in the USB drive and rebooted to the install DVD. The installer picked up the USB drive, and everything worked after that. But now the internet doesn't work. :( Any help would be appreciated. I have a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integreted controller, which has been listed as compatible.
