i have tried many ways to backup my osx86.

wanna move my original osx into another hd , coz the old hd's hfs+ partition is really small

and dont know how to resize partition without format partition or reinstall osx.

superduper!

can totally backup all my file and os to another hd, and smartupdate really fast.

when i wanna use the same way to transfer my old osx to a new partition,

transfer is success without any error, but new hd just can't boot.

and use spfdisk to make a boot menu in mbr.

spfdisk shows that's partition (OSX) seems can't boot.

windows partition can boot normally.

so i choice windows partition , and try to boot mac osx through ntloader

but CHAIN0 says CHAIN booting error and TBOOT says no HFS+ Partition.

ghost

ghost work fine also, copy partition to partition without error.

spfdisk shows both of OSX ans windows partition can boot, but in fact , OSX partition still can't.

so again , i choise boot my osx from CHAIN and TBOOT through ntloader.

it works this time, i can login into my osx and work fine like old one.

but problem became the partition free space.

disk utility shows correct size of osx partition, but wrong available size.

my old partition is 12G ,used 10G , available is 2G.

new partition 50G, transfer success so used still 10G , available also still 2G <--- ???

i think maybe if i wanna make osx boot , i can't only clone the files

clone all files will still missing boot sector or boot loader etc.

ghost clone full partition , so it can boot no problem.

i got a bootable partition now (ghost), just partition available size error

maybe i should use superduper again. transfer all files, try if i can boot correctly and without any problem.

so superduper again , finish , reboot then dead again

partition can't boot , like first time i used superduper.

also tried boot from jas 10.4.8 install dvd , format and restore target partition, still can't boot.

i give up to "restore" or "clone" , reinstall 10.4.8 and install 10.4.10 update

copy all kext in extensions to new partition, done

is there any solution can solve this problem ? how mac osx detect partition size?

or which file that i need to remove , can let osx detect free space again ?

thanks.

ps. i read all post regarding boot from use device, another hd or backup, restore osx

all can't work on mine.

You need to use the disk utility from your install disk to create a bootable drive with an MBR format. Then you can use Carbon Copy Cloner or CopyCatx or something similar to clone your partition onto it (with Carbon Copy Cloner, you check the "make bootable" box)...

Speaking of Ghost 2003, I just used this yesterday to migrate to larger Hard Drive (80GB ---> 160GB). This utility worked perfectly and it was able to clone (Mac OS X, FAT32 and NTFS Partitions). The Mac OS X Partition was copied over as same size. The FAT32 and NTFS Partitions were expanded to larger sizes of my choice (which is OK since I store My Documents and Media Files on the FAT32 Partition (so both OS can access them).

I haven't noticed any problem with available space on Mac OS X Partition (although I didn't resize the partition). All in all, I'm very happy with Ghost 2003 utility.
