Wheatloaf
Hi there, I read on Wikipedia and on these forums that you can use normal graphics cards under windows. I picked up an 8800GTS 320mb and popped it in the bottom slot, moving the 7300 up a slot, and the machine gives out a horrible screech when I turn it on, like an alarm. Am I doing something wrong, or does this not work? Thanks for your help! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_Pro#Hardware Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/65457-8800gts-in-a-mac-pro/ Share on other sites
Proteo
This maybe? Not all PCIe slots on the Mac Pro are electrically X16; only the "double wide" slot is electrically x16. PCIe X16 cards will fit in the other slots physically, but will suffer with lower performance as these other slots are dynamically allocated lanes based on what cards are installed. enb14
Also remember that mac video cards have EFI/BIOS and normal PC video cards only have BIOS Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/65457-8800gts-in-a-mac-pro/#findComment-463855 Share on other sites
Wheatloaf
The card is in the double wide slot. I know it has a BIOS, my understanding from what I've read is that it works in Windows and not OSX, which is fine. I've also tried it with additional power, to no effect. It is just not working at all, and the computer is emitting a high pitched tone. It seems like some people on these boards can do it... any of you care to offer some advice? Wheatloaf
Ok, so I did get the card working in Windows now. The problem was just that I tried to split the spare molex to the optical drive, and it turns out my card needs two dedicated power hookups. That's ok, I should be able to figure out a way to split a couple of the fans instead. Now my issues is that with both cards in the machine doesn't boot. It just sits there, with nothing on either DVI or VGA. Do I really have to physically swap graphics cards when I want to play games? Fr4nk
well really an 8800 gts needs a good psu with a pci-e 6 pin power connector, I'd assume there should be one as the mac pro's use ati's X1900's which have the same power connector... Unless the apple boards have larger wattage feed through the pci-e slot... -Fr4nk Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/65457-8800gts-in-a-mac-pro/#findComment-465072 Share on other sites
Wheatloaf
Yes, there is enough power. The issue now is that with both cards in the machine doesn't boot. Some users seem to get away with 2 cards... can anyone offer any advice?
