Hey guys, I am dual booting a hackintosh between Windows & OSX.

Windows is for gaming, so I will be getting a top end nvidia card (8800gtx or the new g92 coming in November), problem is, this card won't work in OS X, so in my other PCI-E slot (I have an SLI mobo) I will be leaving my 7800gt 256mb which i currently have running. In Windows, I will simply use device manager to disable the 7800gt, and plug my monitor into the other card.

When I boot to OS X, I will swap the monitor plug and run from the 7800gt. My question, though, is how do I stop OS X from defaulting to use the card it doesn't support and then things not displaying correctly? How can I disable this 8800gtx or whatever card I get so that OS X knows to use the 7800gt? I know how to do this in Windows via the device manager; does OS X have an equivalent? Or will I needed to edit kexts? Or what?

Thanks all!

Can't you just swap the cards, putting the 7800GT in the first PCIE slot and the new one in the second? My guess is that OSX won't even see the new card at all. Also, you might want to buy a cheap video switch, so you won't have to plug and unplug the monitor off the adapter every time you want to use a different OS.

I'll give that a shot, but I'm not sure if it will work. I guess I'm wondering if anyone knows for sure what will happen, or if there is a way to disable in case there are problems. It would be good to know before spending the money.

Good idea on the video switch. I currently have a KVM hooked up right now (two comps share the same monitor, keyboard, mouse and I double tap a button on the keyboard to switch). What could I get that won't interfere with this? A box that plugs into both and has a physical toggle switch would be ideal. Can you recommend anything to me?

Thanks a bundle.
