zoombots Posted September 27, 2007 Share Posted September 27, 2007 Hi, I have Uphuck 10.4.9 r1 installed on one dirve and XP on a separate drive and would like to know if what's the best way to use a bootloader to choose the OS. It seems that all the dual-boot tutorials on this forum are for installs on different partitions of the same drive. I tried to use GAG (a graphical bootloader) to choose different startup drives but when I chose the OSX86 Drive, I would get the "HFS +partiotion" error. It seems that both the XP and Darwin bootloader can be coded to startup on specific drives with additional instructions to boot the OS, but I haven't seen any clearly layedout tutorials. If anyone could point me to the best solution, that would be great. Thx. On my motherboard (Gigabyte P35-DS3P), I can hit the F12 key when I start up the computer to select the drive to boot from. Then I simply select either the drive with Windows XP or the one with MacOS. (with osx on separate hd) I use it on vista but I am sure it works with xp as well. You ahve to wait for the bios, change the settings and then reboot! Then I get a screen with a list of drives to boot from. There is no re-boot involved nor do I need to go into the bios settings; it boots immediately after selecting the drive. What motherboard are you using? Perhaps there is a hidden option. What motherboard are you using? Perhaps there is a hidden option. This feature is not on all motherboards and some that do have it have different access keys. It's worth checking out all the F keys before using Acronis or chain0. BTW Zoombots, I don't use either of those 2 methods anymore but I've used both in the past successfully. If you have any kind of newer system board, Acronis does not add that much time to the boot up (maybe 5-6 seconds). The chain0 method is pretty simple though. Both are effective: one has an attractive gui and the other is more similar to darwin (may require hitting a couple more keys than Acronis). Right Click My Computer, Advanced, Startup And Recovery, EDIT XP bootloader and add this line to it...... C:\chain0="Mac OS X86"..... And the next time you reboot voila you now have a osx86/XP dual boot. I can confirm this, works perfectly! This is just using Windows XP native built in boot selector. Additionally you can set, in WinXP, which system has to be "main one" for booting. I set osx as main one and selection time of 5 sec. So if I don't maunally select XP in 5 sec. computer will boot straight to osx. jannaspookie Posted October 17, 2007 Share Posted October 17, 2007 I installed Mac OS X on my slave drive yesterday, did the whole chain0 copy and boot.ini edit, but I'm having a problem. When I boot up, Mac OS x86 is on the list of available OS's, but when I select it it crashes as it's loading the login screen. Do I need to reinstall Mac or does anyone have any suggestions? Thx. . . if you install an OS to each HDD with t'other disconnected [to make things simpler], then connect both, & install GAG to the MBR of the WinXP HDD & set this to be firstboot in the BIOS, I would be very surprised indeed if GAG didn't work - it is effective at booting from a second HDD.
