A question about chipset

Hi folks,

 

This is a newbie question. I see a lot of threads where they specify that 'IOPCIFamily.kext' and 'IOPCCardFamily.kext' is for 'TI PCIxx12 104C:8039' or 'TI PCIxx21/x515 104C:8031'.

 

Could anyone please explain what the leading 'TI PCIxx12' / 'TI PCIxx21' signifies and what the trailing '104C:8031' / '104C:8039' signifies ?

 

Also, if I were to buy a PCI Cardbus, how would I know which chipset it has because most of the manufacturers are not specifying it on their packaging or on their website.
