Booting into Black Screen with 6800OC card

I got the install to run fine. I can boot off of the HD, but then when its time for the desktop to appear, all I see is a black screen. it seems the display card is on but putting out black. using a BFG 6800OC AGP card on Abit mobo, P4 540@3.2 ghz, 1g ram. I also have a decklinkSP card in the machine too. maybe pull that to get the machine to boot ? also in the machine is a Promise SATA RAID card which the OS should ignore, and a PCI FW card which works in both my G5 and PC in XP.

 

suggestions on how to fix ? I suspect its something to do with the display not being configured on startup correctly, which is weird considering that the machine boots from the install CD ok. I've sen bits and peices around here,but no direct answer on how to do this. is it possible to boot into single user mode, use emacs to hack the config file, then get booting to work as it should ?
