Tek_No
Ok, I know, I'm new here but I've been reading this forum and topics for a month now... So much to read I've been running Mac Os X 10.4.1 for about a month now on my HP Pavilion ZT3010EA (Centrino 1.4gHz) and it was running great. After reading all the fuzz about PAE supported cpu's I first decided to stay with 10.4.1 as I had the feeling that my cpu is not supporting PAE (Everest doesn't show it, Cup-Z doesn't show it, Win XP doesn't show it). But yesterday I thought: what the hell, let's try Wesley's patched version of the installer DVD and try to install it on my laptop. When booting in verbose mode ( -v ) I can see that one of the first lines being displayed says: PAE Enabled but a couple of lines below that the line it is showing my CPU features with PAE NOT being listed... The DVD installed fine but now I can't boot it the way I was booting my previous 10.4.1 installation (using the chain0 in Windows XP's boot.ini). As this is STILL not very clear for me: is my laptop supporting PAE or not? Or in other words: if I am able to run the full 8f1111 installation native from the DVD is my machine supporting PAE or is it only after the installation has finished succesfully that 8f1111 keeps on rebooting when trying to launch it from the multi-booter? Thx for any reaction (Y) Tek_No Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/6410-to-pae-or-no-t-to-pae/ Share on other sites
silentbob
If you are able to boot your cd, that means your cpu DOES support PAE. By lack of PAE yor install DVD should reboot just after starting your install (hit enter key at boot prompt) . Most of banias and dothan cpus have broken PAE, that's way it is not listed. Looks like you're lucky, and your pae is working correctly, however will not be listed by diagnostic program. Tek_No
Thx for the quick reply, silentbob ! Ok, now that I know that I am a lucky man: is there any way to find out why the partition is not booting the fresh installed 8f1111? I can't see any error messages and can't use -v (verbose) mode or safe mode as I can't get that far: I got Windows XP listed as option 1 and Mac Os X as option two (using my boot.ini) but whenever I enter on the Mac Os X option nothing happens... Thx again, Tek_No Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/6410-to-pae-or-no-t-to-pae/#findComment-39807 Share on other sites
silentbob
After choosing osx from boot menu try hit <F8> very fast. Sometimes helps. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/6410-to-pae-or-no-t-to-pae/#findComment-39966 Share on other sites
Tek_No
Ok, what I tried now is to start the installation DVD again and then select the "StartUp Disk" to be Mac Os X on the installed partition... This makes the Mac Os X partition the active one (so I loose my dual boot option from XP) but when rebooting it now says "Bootloader not found" although the Mac Os X 8f1111 installation was succesful... Of course that's the reason why it isn't booting but I don't have a clue how to fix this... Any ideas? Thanks! Tek_No (P.S. In the mean time I used a partition manager to set the Windows XP partition to be the active one again so I have my dual-boot option again...) Tek_No
Ok, the story goes on... Currently posting from within 8F1111 :pirate2: Just for the record (maybe others can use this as well) here what I needed to do to get it running: - as silentbob explained: quickly hit F8 in the XP dual boot menu (I'm using chain0 in boot.ini) to get to the second boot screen where I can select Mac Os X to boot from - the very first boot (just using -v to get verbose mode) it got stuck on the desktop showing the background while losing the mousepointer and freezing to death - powered down the laptop and restart this time in SAFE mode (-x) - now I got to the registration screen and I could enter some information and create my Os X account - logged in and it was working fine - selected the Startup Disk from System Preferences to select Mac Os X partition to boot from (and not the NTFS partition used by XP) - after a reboot I got the Bootloader error again so I used Partition Magic again to set the XP partition to be the active on So now I'm able to boot into 8f1111 by hitting F8 from the XP dual boot menu again: don't know what exactly changed in this release when compared to 10.4.1 previously running on my laptop as this WAS working correctly (didn't need to hit F8) for this previous version but I can live with that Here are the specs of my laptop: - HP Pavilion ZT3010EA - Centrino 1.4 gHz - 512MB ram - Hitachi 60GB 7200rpm 2.5in hdd (the 7200rpm makes Os X boot a lot faster) - ATI Radeon 9200 (in fact it's a Radeon 9000 changed by HP) - 1280x800 WideScreen Tft (of course: resolution is not ok) - Intel Pro Wireless 2200BG (not working) - Build-in Ethernet (working fine) - Synaptics TouchPad (working fine) - Firewire - USB 2.0 Funny thing is that Mac Os X is listing my cpu features as: CPU features: FPU VME DE PSE TSC MSR MCE CX8 SEP MTRR PGE MCA CMOV PAT CLFSH DS ACPI MMX FXSR SSE SSE2 TM EST TM2 So: NO PAE and it IS running...
