Tack Furlo
I just got an HP dv9000 series laptop. Amongst other neat things, it has dual 120GB HDDs, so I got the wise idea of trying to install several OSes - XP, Ubuntu, and OSX mainly - each in a VMWare (workstation version 6) system and be able to boot whichever I need. The XP and Ubuntu installs went great, but for some reason, neither my 10.4.8 install DVD (JaS's version) nor my 10.4.6 will install. 10.4.6 gets to the white load screen and just hangs, for in excess of an hour (tried 3 times now) with the little black thing whirling around, giving me no error. On 10.4.8 (which I'd prefer), it tries to boot but never makes it to that white screen, instead opting to give me an error saying "could not find root". If I attempt booting the actual laptop from a real DVD, it works fine, so I can't help but think it's a problem with VMware and/or JaS's DVD (or most likely a problem with them playing nice together.) I don't want to install it to a real partition mainly because once leapord comes out and gets cracked and stable, I'd like to wipe out the 10.4.x install and use leopord, so I'm using a virtual disk (12GB pre-allocated, though I can make it larger if needed.) I would wait, but between now and then I've gotten a job working for a small regional ISP as the network manager and several of our customers have a mac, so I need to be able to troubleshoot problems for them if I can now (hence why I installed XP. Ubuntu is for use with accessing our servers. This is all for work). I have JaS's 10.4.10 patch, so I don't care wether I get 10.4.8 or 10.4.6 installed, since I will upgrade it anyway. Any suggestions as to what I can try? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/63881-problems-installing-osx-in-vmware/ Share on other sites
skyhighmac
Does your 10.4.8 have the ppf1 patch? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/63881-problems-installing-osx-in-vmware/#findComment-452276 Share on other sites
~pcwiz
Yep, if the 10.4.8 JaS image does not have the PPF1 patch, it will not be bootable in VMware. Also, make sure that you are using a working version of Disk Utility to format your OS X partiton/drive in VMware. If you are using 10.4.8 to partition, make sure that it is patched with PPF2 otherwise the partitions Disk Utility creates will not be usable. Tack Furlo
Anyone care to point me to a download link for the patch, preferably the PPF2 one since I will indeed be using Disk Utility to format the disk? ~pcwiz
I'm quite sure that you cant download the PPF2 patch. You have to download a JaS ISO that is prepatched with PPF2. It will say in the name ..."PPF1 + PPF2" Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/63881-problems-installing-osx-in-vmware/#findComment-457273 Share on other sites
Tack Furlo
Ok...I'll start it now and maybe it'll be done by next week. (jk, though normally it would take me well over 4 days.) Too bad too. I have both his 10.4.8 ISO and the same burned to a DVD. With this new laptop (being dual core and everything) I really prefer VMWare as I can dedicate one core to VMWare and the other to the host. Yet, it's such a pain to download an entire additional 3GB+ ISO when I'm sure a basic 100MB-200MB patch would do the trick. Just the same, since I'm not doing an install to the real, physical computer, the DVD I have is worthless to me now. I know from past experience that JaS has made posts here, so to JaS (should he ever read this) please post a PPF2 patch that's just the patch like you posted the 10.4.10 update patch! I'm lucky since my new ISP job means I'll be directly at the router pulling down 1.8 Megabytes a sec for about 4 hours tomorrow (and even more if not for the writes to my HDD maxing out ) so I can probably finish it then, but a small patch release for the many folks who already have a 10.4.8 ISO would be nice. Tack Furlo
Well...this is still a problem, nearly 2 weeks later, but you could say it's worse. I finally finished downloading JaS's ISO of 10.4.8 with both PPF1 and PPF2 yesterday morning. Happy as a bug in a rug. I had my morning cup of coffee and then proceeded to format a new 20GB HDD in VMWare Workstation 6. I gave it the ISO to use as the CD drive and set it up with 512MB of memory. I then proceeded to try to boot. One boot out of about 10 even tries to work. The rest go through the 8 second "press F8 for options" countdown in about 3 seconds, then the VM resets itself and tries again. On about 1 out of 10, however, I'm able to get it to try (yet sadly fail) to boot. The attached file is a screenshot of VMWare at that point where basically launchd fails. After that, it'll sit here for 10 years if I let it and still do nothing, or I assume that since it hasn't budged since about 4PM yesterday (18 hours ago.) Anyone care to clue me in on why it still fails even though it has the PPF1 and PPF2 patch? Is there something ELSE I missed? ~pcwiz
I know EXACTLY why you are getting that launchd error. Its because you are mounting the ISO as a CD-ROM device in VMware. VMware can't properly read the ISO. Mount the ISO in Daemon Tools and direct VMware to the Daemon Tools virtual drive instead. Hope it works pcwiz Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/63881-problems-installing-osx-in-vmware/#findComment-462559 Share on other sites
Tack Furlo
Ok, it's working! It's installing now, so thank you. I'll post a screenshot for ya once it installs. Since I have your attention, though, here's another question. It's not critical or important but I'm curious anyhow. I also have Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows XP Pro SP2 (the "TinyXP" build) installed in other VMs, and both have VMWare Tools installed and working. I know obviously that there's no VMWare profile for MacOS and as such I've loaded it as FreeBSD (I had a VMWare Player image once that did it as FreeBSD so it made sense.) However, I'm willing to bet that whatever VMWare Tools may be available for FreeBSD won't work in MacOS. So my question is twofold. 1) If I was to get GCC for OSX and compile it from the vmware tools source, would it work? 2) Is there a binary package for OSX somewhere to save me the trouble? Thanks. Install is about 80% done - I'm very happy (and will be even more happy if it'll do 1440x900 resolution!) ~pcwiz
Heres how to change your resolution in VMware OS X without VMware Tools (once your installs is working): http://######.com/software/vmwareosx86ir.htm There is no official VMware Tools for OS X yet but gnubeard has made his own version which unlocks most of the features that VMware Tools has. See here: http://######.com/software/vmwaretoolsosx86.htm Scroll down and read the "Alternative to VMware Tools" section. I'll keep you posted if an version of official VMware Tools is made for OS X. BTW, if you step by step instructions on how to install, see my guide for installing on VMware with screenshots: http://######.com/software/vmwareosx86.htm And if you need help getting internet to work with OS X on VMware, see this guide: http://######.com/software/vmwareosx86network.htm Hope this helps Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/63881-problems-installing-osx-in-vmware/#findComment-463151 Share on other sites
Tack Furlo
yes, it helps a lot, so thanks. also, the install went fine and the internet connection works fine as well. I tried setting the resolution in the boot.Apple kext or something like that - I'll have to grab the exact filename - and it worked to a certain extent. It defaulted to 1024x768 and when I set it to 1440x900 in that file, it went up to 1152x8-something, which is better, but still not full screen. I'll check your site for that. thanks again.
