Connect to server crashes 10.4.3

I've run into a problem with my 10.4.3 installed (8F1111g). I can no longer connect to Windows machines on our network.

 

If i use the Go -> Connect to Server menu item, the first time after trying smb://IPADDRESS I get the message:

 

"Sorry, the operating could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred.

(Error Code -50)."

 

If I click the "Try Again" button, I am hit with the "You must restart your computer" announcement.

 

Alternatively, if I browse Networks throught he finder, I can see our workgroup and the machines on it. I can click on any machine, and get its information, but as soon as I click the Connect button, I once again get "you must restart your computer".

 

In 10.4.1 I was able to browse my desktop from OS X without a hitch. Anyone else had this problem, got any suggestions?

 

The network is all Windows XP Pro machines (with the exception of the one OS X x86 box), with both drive and folder shares. All connected via cables, except my laptop which is wireless - either way they both yield the same results.

I don't have a solution yet but I have come to get the same problem.

 

The funny thing is that I first installed OSX on a dedicated ATA drive (20 gb). It worked, I could install iLife 06 from a remote disk image on a windows machine.

 

Now I installed OSX, the same way (using VMware because native wouldn't work with me) onto my main HD in a separate partition (primary partition). This is a SATA disk. Apart from that I don't see any difference. And I don't remember fiddling with something specific in the BIOS.

 

Somehow if I access the same machine using FTP then I can do network transfers without problems. Same with net browsing and such things. I'll have a look at my log and report more on this later.

 

BTW, what language are you using?.. Another difference is that the first time on the ATA drive I used English and now I used french. But I guess setting english as the main language won't fix this.

I'm using English.

 

The only thing I've been able to do to get around this is install OS X Server rather than Windows Server, and use that to share files/internet/printers etc.

I was having this same problem. If you try smb://ip.address, it crashes the computer. You have to use smb://ip.address/sharename. Thus if you are sharing your music folder as mp3 you must use smb://ip.address/mp3. That's what worked for me, hopefully it will work for you.
