CPngN
By natively you mean no .kext modification? I'm considering about buying dwa-556 since I have the DIR-655 802.11n router ... Can anyone confirm this? They have this router for $120 at costco, looks like it gets very good reviews, and if I could get wireless working with an N adapter it might be worth the money. Actually it looks like for the PCMCIA notebook adapter I'd want the DWA-652. T.I.A.! Barely Tangible
I bought the Dlink DWA-552 from Frys ($69) and it works natively. I've occasionally had drops in the connection and/or a minor prob connecting upon boot, but for the most part its great and is detected as native airport. Packet loss on DWA-552 (and other cards) were mentioned in this thread: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=84861 I have not seen any packet loss though. My setup: Kalyway 10.5.1, Asus P5W-DH (removed the silly Realtek 8187). Note that DWA-552 is the PCI version with the Atheros 5008 chipset, while DWA-556 is the PCI express version. kamikaze
I have the card in front of me. I ordered it last week, got it to almost work. But then gave up. The card is almost plug and play, in other worlds once you install it in a PCI slot, it shows as AirPort. OSX will recognize it, you can connect to networks and everything. so far beautiful Unfortunately, I started to experience slow network speeds and serious lag issues: every 9mn the network will drop... and then suddenly come back after 30-60s. I am connecting to a Linksys WRT160N in wireless N, So I thought... it might be the N draft {censored} - these two devices and not fully compatible. So I forced everything back to wireless G. Still the same issue.. I eventually gave up. For now I am running an Edimax 7728In in Wireless N. It works better, it's not perfect. and worst than anything it is not recognized as AirPort... Any suggestions, let me know, Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/62028-dwa-552-support/#findComment-617439 Share on other sites
kamikaze
Last status : Card fully working and stable. 10.5.2 fixes a lot of instabilities. Also on a WRT160N, you have to disable burst mode on the router. 100% working and recognized by Mac OSX 10.5.2 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/62028-dwa-552-support/#findComment-623353 Share on other sites
Barely Tangible
UPDATE - Upon further usage, my Dlink DWA-552 card kept droppping my wireless connection. I did unlimited pings for an hour or two and about every few minutes it would drop for a little while like clockwork. However it did manage to reconnect automatically, at least when pings were active. When I wasn't pinging constantly, it would rarely be active for me to use, and turning it off and on was not effective - it just didn't have signal most of the time. SOLUTION - I returned this card and bought the Dlink DWA-556, which was the PCI-Express version of the same Atheros AR5008 chipset. Since then I have had no problems dropping connections and it has been rock solid using AirPort. I suggest this to anyone having problems with the DWA-552 or any other card. Note: it was $89, so I spent $20 more. It is very possible I just had a bad card, however I know the Mac Pros are PCIe based, so why not try to duplicate if you have the opportunity? MY RIG - Asus P5W DH (removed RealTek RT8187 card), E6600 Core2Duo @2.88Ghz, ATI X1900XT, Highpoint RAID 2300 PCIe, Kalyway 10.5.1 + GUID+Vanilla + Kalyway's 10.5.2 update (not a hitch) + Graphics Update (no difference). Wireless router is WRT54GL + DD-WRT bios with signal boost. Problems encountered: - no sleep (Grr) - photoshop crashes upon exit (just ignore error) - disk not initialized upon boot (just ignore error) ~BT I bought the Dlink DWA-552 from Frys ($69) and it works natively. If so, what kind of speeds are you seeing? My dive into 802.11N has been, so far, unsuccessful. I just tried a Linksys WMP300N connecting to a Linksys WMP330N. The card reported connections at 130 Mbps (supposed to be 300 Mbps) but never got close to that in sustained transfers. Xiloa
I just bought this card expecting it to work natively and it is recognized and can scan/connect to networks but after about ten seconds my whole computer freezes and I have to hold the power button to shut it down. I'm using iPC 10.5.6 and Voodoo 9.5.0 on AMD with an nForce 430 mobo. Any ideas?
